Hi Guys

I am newly diagnosed as Type 2, I began a low dose of Metfromin last week, today I have experienced headache, nausea and a bit of weakness. I sthis normal?

Hi Elaine and a warm welcome to the forum it is totally normal for this i am on met and have been since feb 09, it takes a good 2-4 weeks for things to settle, any longer then a visit to the Gp may be in order.

Hi Elaine, welcome to the forum 🙂 I think that side effects are fairly common with metformin but hope fully should subside in a week or two. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and we'll do our best to help 🙂 Have a look at the 'Useful links' thread for some suggestions on recommended reading that may help you to put things in perspective and form a plan for managing your diabetes well. 🙂

Thank you, I cannot go to,work, today, feel unwell, first time I have been off work for 4 years??? I am only on 500mg, will this feeling unwell last long???

Hello Elaine and welcome to the club no-one wants to be a member of !

The symptons you are mentioning are all quite normal for starting Metformin it seems. If it gets too bad ask your Dr for the slow release form of this drug - it's more expensive for the surgery to prescribe, but has less side effects.

Let us know how you get on and post any rants, questions or anything on here. They are a great lot and I'm sure you'll find them very helpful - I have.

All the best, 🙂

A hypo is when your blood sugar level drops below 4 mmol/l. It's rare for this to happen unless you are on insulin injections or oral medication that causes your pancreas to produce more insulin of its own. Metformin won't cause hypos so you shouldn't need to worry about them 🙂 That eeling of being lost and confused is perfectly understandable - there's a lot to take in, but stick with us and you'll soon pick up what you need to know.

hypoglyclimia is when your blood sugar goes low usually under 4 it is the opposite to hyperglycimia which is when they go high, many type 2s dont actually suffer hypos it is very rare unless your on certain types on meds.

Welcome to the forum Elaine. I hope things settle down for you quickly.

Meanwhile, I hope that we can help with any specific questions that you may have.

Hi Elaine

I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and I'm still asking questions! I was started on Metformin 500 mg the first week then upped to 1000 mg the following week. The side effects aren't at all pleasant, but stick with it and you'll be fine. I think it's just the body readjusting itself to a complete change of diet (far less carbs) and more protein. I have been suffering from burping, bloating and slight constipation but nothing I can't handle. By all accounts, everyone is suggesting asking for the slow release metformin if the standard one still gives side effects after a good few weeks.

I've been given some great advice from people here, I'll help as much as I can too.

Donna x

Hi Elaine,

Welcome to the forum. It is difficult when first diagnosed there is an awful lot to take in. Just try to take it a day at a time and if you have questions ask away.

Do hope things settle down for you soon,

Take care,

Shirl
