Hi. I’ve recently crossed the A1c threshold and I’m struggling to understand why…maybe hereditary. I’m only slightly overweight and I’m so active everyone calls me the energizer bunny. I have familial high cholesterol over 300. I’ve always tried to eat healthy but I guess I’m doing it wrong. Hoping your lessons and forums might give me more clues. I’m not on any meds except for glaucoma right now. Losing even a pound is a struggle.

Welcome to the forum. Many feel they have a healthy diet but sadly it may not be so if your body has a problem metabolising carbohydrate often because your pancreas produces enough insulin but it is not able to be used efficiently so blood glucose is raised. The way of managing this is to reduce your intake of carbs so your body can cope, losing weight if needed will also help.
As you are on no medication then a low carbohydrate approach would be suitable if that suits you, it can also lead to reduced cholesterol as well. Have a look at this link for some ideas and information about that approach. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
People often try low calorie or a soups and shakes regime to give a kick start but whatever you choose had to be enjoyable otherwise it is not sustainable, it need to be a new way of eating for life.

Welcome to the forum @Mayroses
As you are just over the threshold (I assume that's for Pre diabetic) and not on any meds, I would think that the 5:2 diet may suit you, just to shift 1 to 2 lbs a week.

The problem is there are so many diets out there, that it can be a minefield to find one that suits and is sustainable

Alan 😉

Hi @Mayroses and welcome to the forum!

Sadly the 'healthy fads' change often and don't fit each and every single person in the same way. At the same time what's considered 'healthy' for one diagnosis is not always the same for another. There's some basic information about food on our website, but you might also find it useful to go through the topics in the forum's Food category - it's sometimes easier to find something that would work for you when reading about other people's experience.

Rather than a specific Diet most of which focus on Calories - focus on Low Carb (obviously including sugars) and see if that helps.

Thank you for the welcome. I have been using the 16/8 intermittent fasting and it seems to work for me however I am at a golf outing for 4 days and the menus are set. So I will get back on track when I return.

Just do your best with the meals you are provided with, don't forget you don't need to eat everything on the plate.
If it is sandwiches I will leave the crusts or things with chips or potatoes or rice just leave most of them. A pasta dish is much more difficult, I just avoid those. I would suspect there will be some choice.

Welcome to forum. I was diagnosed in July. I'm not medicated either - just diet controlling. I'm resistant to weight loss too - too many diet clubs in the past and too much yo-yoing I think.
But, eating for diabetes is different. I do 16:8 too (most days. I occasionally have a third meal per day on a weekend) and I eat low (not keto/no carb) carb. I don't focus on the weight loss but the last time I checked, I was over 10k lighter, a couple of inches of my waist and my BMI has dropped from morbidly obese to less scary 'just obese'! And it hasn't been a struggle - I still love what I'm eating.

Enjoy your golfing holiday and I hope the forum helps you find a sustainable way of eating once you get back to it.

@Mayroses welcome to the forum. Have you had a blood test which has determined you are diabetic? I have just posted a video I saw on the Zoe site where a professor explains the risk factors for diabetes and what to do about it. I found it very interesting. As a fatty I always looked at food labels for salt and calories but apart from obvious carbs which I associate with takeaway meals I hadn't looked at carbs and sometimes it was a shock.
The freshwell site @Leadinglights has tagged is very good especially the pictures explaining groups. Basically veg below ground is more carby than above.

Hi @Mayroses Welcome to the forums, like you recently diagnosed with a HbA1c of 86 on the second blood test. I too am reasonably fit, not overweight and finding it easy to go low carb (less than 130g/day) but the weight loss is a bit of an issue and I have noticed the last couple of days that I am losing muscle in my arms. Will join a gym this weekend and start doing some weights to try and counteract that little issue.

The Freshwell app I have found to be good and while some things come out a bit weird it does give you some ideas about how change the diet in a way that is not a big change.

Made it through the golf outing and didn’t gain any of the weight that I lost so far. Ended up with a horrendous cold.
Went to the grocer this morning and tried to buy healthier vegetables and fruit.

Thanks for the update @Mayroses

Hope you enjoyed your time away - perhaps all those extra miles walked offset the different ‘away from home’ menu?

Went to see my doctor the other day. I still don’t have to take any meds just keep working on getting the weight off. I’ve lost a bit more since I came back from my golf trip. Keeping my fingers crossed I can keep it off. I haven’t even touched the Halloween candy and I don’t miss it. Thank you for your support.
