Welcome to the forum. A bit more information about your diagnosis will help people make appropriate suggestions as things that can make a difference will be what your HbA1C is that led to your diagnosis as it will indicate how far you are in the diabetes zone also have you been prescribed any medication at this point.
The pains in your legs can be due to high blood glucose but equally it can be caused by a sudden reduction in blood glucose from dietary changes or medication. People find it can ease once blood glucose is better managed but there are medications depending on the precise nature of the pains.
As far as blood testing is concerned people find it a useful tool to find what foods you can tolerate without increasing blood glucose and also to check on day to day, week to week progress etc or if they feel unwell. As a Type 2 most people have to self fund but inexpensive monitors can be bought on line, generally cheaper than the pharmacy. But GPs should prescribe if people are taking specific medication which could cause low blood glucose.
Have a look at this link for some ideas for modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago .
Blood sugar levels of 94 , high blood pressure and protein in urine. Have just been told to follow a low sugar diet exercise and take blood pressure daily to monitor . I feel little info has come from the GP/ diabetic nurse. Haven't said whether I'm type 1 or 2 yet as awaiting more blood tests ...just been told to go with type 2 for now . It has come as a massive shock as I eat healthy and walk daily

I was still writing when you posted, an HbA1C of 94 mmol/mol certainly is high so I am surprised that you have not been prescribed any medication.
Walking is good exercise. People sometimes feel they have a healthy diet but sadly what may be healthy for someone not diabetic, some foods are not, if people have a problem with carbohydrates.
Do you know if they have done the tests to tell if you have Type 1 or Type 2, those are c-peptide and GAD antibodies.
Would you like to post some examples of typical meals and people may spot some problem foods.
I would also recommend the book or app Carbs and Cals as it gives carb values of a whole range of foods and meals with pictorial indications of various portion sizes.

You might get a bit of a shock if you work out the number of grams of carbohydrate you are eating daily - it isn't just sugar which is the problem if your Hba1c is over 90.
I started off at 91 even though I was not eating anything with sugar, it all came from the 'healthy' high carb low fat diet the GP printed out for me.
My target us under 40gm of carbs a day, as that gives me normal numbers.
