Hi all

I'm new to the forum as just recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, any advice or tips would be gladly accepted on the best way to keep the sugar levels low and anything i am entitled to as a type 2 diabetic. I have heard that i am entitled to free prescriptions as a type 2 diabetic.

Hi all

I think you are only entitled to free prescriptions if you are on any medication for diabetes.
Were you told what your HbA1C is as that will determine how much work you have to do and how best to approach reducing your blood glucose and managing your condition.
If you are hoping to do this by dietary changes only or just metformin which would be the first medication that people would be given if their HbA1C was high then a low carbohydrate approach is one many find successful.
Have a look at this link for some ideas for a way of modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

This will tell you if you’re entitled to free prescriptions.

I’d wager that some other things are more urgent however. Those would be an appointment with a diabetes nurse to discuss your diagnosis with and to plan whatever comes next.

Hi @sgilmour. I see you are posting from Austria. If you are based there then replies you get will largely be based on what happens in the UK which might be quite different to what happens in Austria.

Welcome to the forum @sgilmour

How did your diagnosis come about? Was it from a regular check-up, or did you go to see your Dr because you felt ill or had some symptoms?

Were you told the result of your HbA1c check that gave you your diagnosis? In the UK, that would be a result above 47mmol/mol.

Knowing your starting point can really help you understand how significant (or relatively minor) the amends to your current way of eating might need to be.

To add to the knowledge you’ve already picked up, you might want to register for an account with the Diabetes UK Learning Zone (the orange tab in the main menu) which is packed full of informative bite-sized modules. Additionally, for a more personal take, members here sometimes suggest Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed which is the experience of one woman to htper diagnosis.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂
