Type 1
Hi folks,

Hope this is ok to post here. I’ve just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I’m 42 and also have ulcerative colitis which is another autoimmune disease. I’m just a bit baffled by it all to be honest

I’ve only been at this for 24 hours so far but I can’t seem to get my blood sugar below 15. I’m on 40 units of Lantus in the morning and then 6 units of NovoRapid before meals. Do I need to talk to my doctor or am I worrying about nothing?

Cheers folks

Hello and welcome to the forum. Don’t panic - if you are very newly diagnosed it will take a while to get your insulin doses correct, everyone is different. Also, your blood sugars have probably been high for a while, if they are dropped back down too quickly you will feel very poorly and it might cause other problems. Just do what you’ve been told for now and make sure you speak to your doctor regularly, at least for the first few weeks. They will probably have to do quite a few adjustments before you start to get normal readings most of the time.

Phew!

Thank you that really helps! It’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I went to the doctor for a blood test on Tuesday and got sent to A&E with blood sugar of 30 and ketones of 2.1 so it makes sense that it’ll take a while to come down

Welcome to the forum @RichieUS

Diabetes can be very overwhelming to begin with, so the intensity of the feelings, anxieties and worries you are feeling are perfectly natural.

When I was diagnosed (over 30 years ago) I was kept in for about 5 days at the hospital which allowed them to look after my numbers - a very good job as I was pretty out of it as I recall.

Give yourself time, and allow things to come down gradually.

Thank you! I was only in hospital for a couple of days but I still feel a bit out of it now if I’m honest!
