Type 2
Hi

I have just (2 days ago) been diagnosed as having type 2 Diabetes. (i think it is that) I have been given a meter to test my levels and some metformin tablets.

I am very new to this and am not sure how and when levels will rise and fall.
I am hoping it sorts itself out soon enough. Living in Spain there is a slight language problem though I understand most medical bits can be tricky.

I have an appt Feb 16th to see the diabetic specialist. No doubt I will find out more then.

I have taken 2 readings a day and have recorded them
Yesterday before foodmidday 353 an hour after 413
Today AM 319 afternoon 419

I am not sure how often I should take these recodsing but hopefully will find out.

Ron

Hi Ron, welcome to the forum 🙂 There's a great resource available in Spain at http://www.diabetesinspain.com/ -well worth checking out! I'd also recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter for a good introduction to Type 2 and how to approach managing it, and Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S will give you the lowdown on how to get the most out of testing your blood.

We measure our blood glucose in different units to you here in the UK, so if you get confused with what people here are writing, just multiply the numbers by 18 to get the equivalent in yours - you can divide yours by 18 to see what they would be in our units.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to try and help you out! 🙂

Hi Ron,

Welcome aboard the good ship DS!

Hi Ronnie and welcome.

When I was first diagnosed I kept a record of my readings along with what I ate and what exercise I did each day. To begin with I tested on waking, before and 1, 2 & 3 hours after meals and also before and after exercise. It's a lot of finger pricking, but doing this will give you a clear idea of what particular foods do to you. You'll quickly learn what you can have and what to avoid. I still keep that record, even though my dx has changed because it still has value for the clinic to see what's happening.

Hi Ron and welcome - if you have a good bilingual friend you my find that they are able to help you when you attend medical appointments.

Hope you find the forum a useful place to be.

Thank you

Thank you for the quick replies, I am looking at that spanish site now.
I took a reading 1.5 hrs after eating and got 539. I have to go to the medical Centre tomorrow so I will make an appt to see the doctor.

Thanks again

Wow, that is a high reading Ron (29.9 mmol/l here). What did you eat? The main thing to bear in mind is that any carbohydrate will raise your levels, so try to keep these at a low level in your meals. Your high level after the meal may well be due to a very high level before you ate, it is the difference between the pre-meal and post-meal that is most important to consider 🙂

Hi nothener, Thanks for the reply. I ate potatoes and a chicken and veg pie with carrots and cauliflor. Its so new to us that my wife and I actually forgot about the potatoes.

Pie pastry often has a lot of carbs in it, as does the potatoes.

Welcome to the forum Ron 🙂

Update
