Hello and welcome. There are several Type 3c on this Forum, so I'm sure someone will be along to support you. In the meantime, enjoy Christmas.

Yes, @simonsid we have a few type 3c's on the forum and they are a friendly bunch. You might have to wait a day or two because as far as I can see most if not all of them have worked things out and for the next day or two their priority will be getting on with life! I'm sure you, like them, will get there.

I'll ask the obvious question - how did your diagnosis come about?

Hi @simonsid and welcome,
I'm T3c after fully surrendering my panc'y to surgery for my (former) pancreatic cancer. As @Docb has already asked, it would help to have a little more background info about yourself - if you'd like to share. Then we can offer more targetted suggestions for helping you to work it all out. But not all suggestions simultaneously - could take a while and make heavy reading!
Meanwhile merry Christmas to you.

Welcome @simonsid
I'm Type 3c following pancreatitis.
Not much pancreas left for me so I've been on insulin from the start.
Are you being treated with insulin?
Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

I don't understand type 3. Type 1 don't make insulin, type 2 can't use insulin. What is type 3 ?
Type 1 have lost the ability/got compromised ability to make insulin due to autoimmune disease (their immune system producing antibodies to attack their own beta-pancreatic cells)

Type 2 starts with insulin resistance (it works less effectively) but can end up with their pancreas exhausted and not able to produce enough insulin

Type 3 is where the pancreas is damaged or removed as a result of other disease (e.g. pancreatitis or cancer) or due to a physical injury which results in less insulin being produced

Hi Simonsid, I'm in the same boat as you having been diagnosed as Type 3c shortly before Christmas. My bout of Pancreatitis was six amd a half years ago so the little fella did a pretty good job of keeping up until now it seems 🙂

Hello, my daughter aged 20 has chronic pancreatitis for 6+ months. She has in the past week developed severe thirst, dry throat, frequent urination, no energy. She cannot gain weight - this isn't new but seems to be getting worse. We are concerned about possible 3c diabetes. Yesterday, the GP surgery tested her blood glucose. The result was normal. I asked about type 3c but no one at the surgery had heard of it.

My first question is - what is the test for type 3c diabetes - is it the same as for type 2?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dear Soupdragon, How did you learn you had necrotising pancreatitis - that is, what were the tests and symptoms? Thanks.

Type 2 is identified through HbA1C.

3c would probably be identified through the fact that the diabetes develops and there is a history of pancreatitis

Tagging 3cs @soupdragon @Proud to be erratic , @eggyg

Thanks, Lily. Because the blood glucose was normal, the GP couldn't diagnose anything despite the symptoms. Does 3c have a marker in the blood or is there another measure? Do you know of a website for this specific information?

The Type is the cause, the effects are similar for all 3. Type 3c is caused through illness involving the pancreas and the resulting damage or removal. If her glucose is normal and HbA1c is normal then she is producing enough insulin and does not have diabetes. Have they checked HbA1c?

Thanks - As far as I can tell, they only checked blood glucose, not HbA1c. It was a one-off sample taken at the GP with the result the same day. How is HbA1c checked?

It's another blood test I'm afraid but worth getting checked.
Thanks - can this be done at the GP, do you know? Is it just one test or over time?

Does HbA1c check the level of insulin?

HbA1C measures average BG over the past 3 months. It can be done at the GP

Thanks. It looks like it is a single test which can read the previous 3 months - is that correct? Thanks for your help.

The HbA1C is done from a blood sample from the arm and normally sent to the lab as not many GP would have the equipment necessary, it can take a few days for the results. It is essentially the average blood glucose over the previous 3 months. To tell if somebody is still producing insulin further test would be needed and those take much longer. Those are used to differentiate between Type 2 and Type 1, Type 3c really comes into a different category being the result of damage or disease of the pancreas.
The other complication is that the pancreas also produces enzymes required for digestion of foods and if the pancreas is compromised then that can affect enzyme production. That can be tested for by a faecal elastase test and if found to be lacking then people can take replacement enzymes.
It rather sounds as if your daughter needs referral to a specialist team

Thanks for this information. She was diagnosed by elastase test with severe pancreatic insufficiency. She uses Creon with food. The pancreas is very painful; this is controlled with amitriptyline. Pain recently got worse, so amitriptyline raised, but this doesn't help to discover or cure the problem. No diagnosis yet for pancreas apart from insufficiency. Waiting for MRI result.

Meanwhile, she is getting sicker and now diabetes-like symptoms are appearing. But because blood glucose test was normal, GP surgery couldn't help further or refer.

I will talk to the GP and GI specialist again next week about further tests and possibility of specialist team.
