Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is Rose and I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I am quite confused about what I can and can't eat at the moment. Takes a bit of getting used to.

Hi @rosie67 and welcome! It is a lot to get your head around. Relax, take a deep breath and let it out. Your diabetes isn't going anywhere and you have time to fix it. Making too many changes and lowering your blood glucose (BG) level too quickly can cause damage to fine blood vessels so you want to bring reduce it gradually.

How did your diagnosis come about?

I was having blood tests for a UTI when they came across it. The doctors thought my symptoms were a UTI.

Oh bless you. Have thou been having other diabetes symptoms - excessive thirst and/or urination? Feeling exhausted?

Did your GP tell you what you HbA1c result was? This should be a number between 30-100+. The threshold for diabetes is 48. It will help us advise you re next steps - also knowing if you are a normal weight or overweight and the advice can be more tailored.

Yes I had been having very thirsty and running to the loo a lot also feeling very tired. My GP hasn't given me a HbA1c result.

Welcome to the forum @rosie67

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but pleased that you have found the forum.
It is a shock at the start and takes time to get your head round things.

There is plenty of experience on here to tap into. Ask any questions that arise,
and be assured that no questions are silly. Just ask.

If you had a blood test done and have the patient access app you might be able to see your HbA1c result on there. I can see all of mine. What was your blood glucose level? Normally you’d expect a diagnosis against the HbA1c as infections can spike your bloods anyway, unless your reading was particularly high. Either way, if they are not in the process of organising that ready for your first checkup with your diabetic nurse I would personally request it. Did they prescribe any meds?

Welcome to the forum @rosie67

Keep asking away with any questions. We are a friendly bunch, with literally centuries of lived diabetes experience between us - and nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’ 🙂

For a good overview of T2 diabetes, these are often recommended on the forum Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Hi all thanks for the kind welcome to the forum. Still don't know my HbA1c reading but I am going to my diabetic nurse on the 17th June so will see what I can find out then.

Hi Rosie, I suspect they are withholding it as it is abnormal. Even though I understand what they mean, my recent blood test showed high Hb1AC, because I am diabetic so they withheld it until the Doctor had checked it or someone had spoken to me. Bit frustrating but for good reason. As it turned out mine had dropped, again, so it was nothing of concern but their procedures meant it was not released into my medical records until they had done their checks- as I said before, I can now see it on patient access. If your GP uses this app its worth getting it setup as it will help you manage your condition going forward. You can also see it via the NHS app if your GP surgery is not using it.
