Type 2
Hi everyone - I was diagnosed last week with Type 2 diabetes......still feeling the shock of it really. My GP wants another blood test before prescribing drugs but has indicated that I will be on metformin. I'm not able to see the diabetic nurse until next week but I want to make changes to my diet and lifestyle immediately...presumably I can't go too wrong by following a low fat diet? I hope to be in touch with many of you over the coming weeks.🙂

Hiya and welcome. You will get lots of help and support here - www.diabetes.org.uk is also a fab site for information - what it is, what care to expect and there is also a section on food and recipes. Lots of people advocate low carbs but we are all different so you will need to do what is right for you. Any questions - do ask!

Welcome

Remember you are not alone - the guys on here are great and will try and help with pointing you in the right direction and if possible giving you hints and tips. Once you have got over the shock and you start to understand how your body is now working, everything will fall in place. Ask to be refered to a dietician they will advise you on what foods to eat and what to stay away from. I started a food diary when I was dianosed back in April last year and download a daily balance sheet from the diabetes uk website which helped me, and helped when I saw a dietican.

Good luck and remember the guys here will always be hear to listen and help if possible.

Hi there and welcome to the club!

I remember when I was first diagnosed as a Type 2 I thought my world had ended and I was walking round Tesco crying my eyes out going "I cant eat that, that or that".

Trust me it gets better, especialy with the support you can find here.

Just remember you are not alone, someone out there will probably have an answer for any question you may have, as they have probably been there, done that and got the badge, the book and the T-shirt!

This really is a useful place to start. Also I would recommend joining Diabetes UK, the Balance magazine is helpful.

Hi - thank you for your advice and support. I have been reading through all the message threads and you are right, everyone is so friendly and a real source of support. It's nicer to think that I am joining a 'club'. Do all diabetics check their blood sugar levels every day - my gp hasn't mentioned this to me but maybe the diabetic nurse will brief me on that when I see her.😉

Hi I can remember how shocked I was when I was told I had type 2 which fortunately was picked up by a blood test as I had been feeling unwell. I was really shocked. Have had my ups and downs and slipped back into bad habits last year and had a wake up call at the end of last year and am back on the straight and narrow. Had managed to regulate things by diet alone but because of the set back last year am on metformin at the mo but hoping with my new good habits I will be able to come off in a couple of months or so as don't like taking tablets. have just registered today on here having renewed my membership to balance and saw the article in there so look forward to more posting etc. regards Kaz
