Hi Clare, welcome to the forum 🙂 Metformin does have a bit of a reputation! Hopefully, the side-effects will settle down for you in a week or two. If you find you really don't tolerate it very well there is a 'slow-release' version which some people find gentler on the system 🙂

How did you come to be diagnosed? I'd suggest having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter to get an idea of what it is all about, and I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which many of our members have found invaluable 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions, there are lots of friendly, knowledgeable people here who will be happy to help out with any concerns or confusion you may have 🙂

Hi Clare, welcome to the windy club!!! And the forum. I was like that at first but it settled after a few weeks. I found that taking a windeze tablet helped.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Taken after breakfast also helps to lessen the effects :D

Hello Clare and welcome to the forum.

Welcome aboard Clare, I have no personal experience of Metformin but I understand it can unsettle the pipes, my Dad took it and found the slow release version better for his delicate digestion 🙂

Welcome from a T2.

I was terrible the first couple of weeks and the pain in my gut was awful. It;s fine now and I take 4 a day for the past 10 years.

... and now you know why diabetics refer to it as Met FARTIN - don't you? Shouldn't laugh, sorry. But it is really the only way to handle things like that.

And just think - how terrible would it be to be a bloke right now instead of you and in the same position, but he's just received a knighthood which the Queen will award to him this Thursday - picture the scene as he kneels down at her feet ........

Hi thanks for all your comments what s lovely group you are. It's all been s bit of a shock as I just had routine blood tests then next thing I knew I was off for a glucose tolerance test then diagnosis so I'm just getting my head round it

Hi Clare. I was diagnosed in Jan. Went to docs as I had a sore tongue. They decided to do a blood test and next day got a phone call to say I might be diabetic! Odd thing was it wasn't from the last blood test I did, it was the results of a blood test I had in July! And they didn't notice at the time!

HI Clare type 2 for nearly 12 years here. I went with something else had a blood test and got called back the same day. Was a big shock at the time.

If you're suffering with the side effects, ask your doctor for the slow release version next time you get the prescription - makes a huge difference !

Helen
