Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, I'm 27 and have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes less than 2 weeks ago. I haven't got a glucose monitor and didn't even know I could get my prescription of Metformin for free until reading about it online after I had bought them.

I'm meant to be on 3 Metformin a day as well as a Statin for my cholesterol. For my first week I was on 1 Metformin a day and felt fine. This week (from last Thursday till now) I've gone up to 2 a day and just always feeling tired despite having a good sleep. I've been sleeping 8-10 hours a day (which is unusual) and could have more. I've also got in a 'can't be bothered' mood and can't focus in my job. Is this normal on these tablets? I mean I'm a glass half full kind of guy.

I've been doing research on what I can eat and can't and am really sticking to it despite all the cravings for the stuff I've been used to eating for years. I didn't even realise how serious diabetes can be until after I was diagnosed and started reading about it.

Anyways, I look forward to talking to people on here and for the long journey ahead 🙂

Hi BCRazor, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Now you are receiving treatment hopefully things will improve, although ideally you do need a meter so you can monitor the effects of different foods on your levels - some things that may appear healthy may actually be having a poor effect on you as people's tolerance for different things can vary a great deal. I would suggest reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which should all give you a good understanding of things. If your nurse/GP won't prescribe a meter and test strips then challenge them - Diabetes UK's Advocacy Pack should help in this matter.

It's possible that your sleep and concentration problems are related to the changes you have made to your diet, as your body gets used to them. Also, if you can manage some daily exercise this will really help both with your sleep and energy levels and will make you much more sensitive to your body's insulin and as a result, your blood sugar levels.

Please ask any questions you may have and we will try our best to help you out 🙂

Welcome to the forum BCRazor 🙂

I seem to recall that some people react to the statins, so that might also be affecting you. If you continue being tired it might be worth talking to your Dr about perhaps a different statin?

Thanks for the advice Northerner. I'm going to get that book this weekend. Yeah I have started doing some walking as advised by my Health Trainer, in the first week I was doing 10 minute brisk walks a day for 6 days and have a day off. This week I'm alternating between 10 and 15 minute walks, then from Thursday I'm doing all 15 minute walks. I know it's not a lot but it's more than what I was doing previously (apart from walking to and from my car for work). Eventually I'll get back into swimming as I love that, it's just difficult to fit it in as I work nights.

I am hoping like you say, it's just the shock to the system that I've gone cold turkey on everything....it's a good job I like drinking water that's for sure. 🙂

And thanks Mark T it's definately something I'm going to mention to the Dr when
I go back on the 17th 🙂
