Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear you are feeling a bit shell shocked but it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed at diagnosis, so do give yourself a bit of time to adjust to the situation. There is lots to take in and process and thankfully, Type 2 diabetes is usually a fairly slow moving condition, so you have a bit of time to get your head around stuff and form a plan of action.

Would you like to tell us a bit about how your diagnosis came about? ie. Was it through a routine blood test or were you symptomatic.... or perhaps some other means?

Do you know your HbA1c result. This is the blood test used to diagnose diabetes and to track your progress and will usually be a number in excess of 47 but can be up into 3 figures if things have gone seriously awry. The higher the number the more likely you will need medication and more significant dietary changes. Has the GP or nurse prescribed medication and if so, do you know what?

Do you have much/any weight to lose?

I am very conscious that I have asked lots of questions above, but I imagine you came to the forum wanting answers to questions yourself, so fire away with yours....

Hello @Pris and welcome to the Forum!

Yes, many people have similar feelings when they've been diagnosed - confused, lost, shocked, overwhelmed.
That's quite normal so try not to worry (easy to say I know) - as you learn more you will realise that things are not too bad after all

Start by learning about the Dreaded D, and as you understand more you will learn how deal with it, and that you can live well with Diabetes, though you will probably have to change your diet; in fact many people take their diagnosis as the motivation to eat better, cut out junk food, processed food, a lot of booze, eat more veg, do more exercise, and all the rest of the healthy stuff we hear about

Look at -

Living With Diabetes on the Home Page of Diabetes UK
The Learning Zone, the red tab at the top of this page
Previous Threads, especially Newbies, Food & Carbs, and if necessary, Weight Loss

That's a lot of reading to do, so take your time, and ask questions - nothing is too simple or silly

And besides advice & information you will also get sympathy and encouragement

Welcome to the forum @Pris

Diabetes can take some time to get your head around. You certainly wouldn't be the first member to feel somewhat overwhelmed and emotional to begin with. :(

But be encouraged... Sometimes you don’t realise how weary, worn down and lethargic you have been feeling. Erratic and elevated blood glucose levels can be exhausting and are linked with low mood, but this may have come on quite gradually, so you may not have noticed, or may have put it down to other things. Making a few positive changes to your menu and activity levels can give you more energy, a clearer mind, and a brighter outlook. Plus the regular checks you get after a diagnosis with diabetes mean that any potential problems may be spotted earlier, and can be sorted out sooner.
In fact many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a sort of catalyst which prompted them to finally make the positive changes towards a healthier and more active life that they had been intending to make for years!

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy.

The Learning Zone mentioned about is a great resource.

Or for a more personal introduction you might like Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which are often recommended on the forum.

Good luck! And keep asking questions 🙂
