Hi , have just been diagnosed with Typ2 diabetes and prescribed Metformin tablets.
I have now realised they can damage the kidneys. Very worried now as I only have 1 kidney , which does not fully function due to Chemo treatment for Leukemia. Any advice ? Thanks

Hello @Penny1950 ,

Thank you for joining and posting on our online community. I don't think their is much information on the medication damaging your kidney. I have included a link about metformin below.

If you are concerned about the medication, I would highly suggest you give our helpline a call at 0345 123 2399 Mon-Fri 9am-6pm.

Hope this helps

You should perhaps read this https://bnf.nice.org.uk/drugs/metformin-hydrochloride/#renal-impairment and have a word with whoever has prescribed the metformin and I assume you will have had a eGFR test as it is not recommended metformin is prescribed if it is low.

Do you know what your HbA1C is so you have an idea of where you are in the diabetic range because if not too high you may be able to reduce it by dietary changes.
