Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi my names louie I'm 28 and was diagnosed type 1 around 7 months ago.
Basically I was losing weight but eating around 5 meals a day, getting paranoid about the comments from other people saying you look skinny, and you've lost weight, so I went to the docs who told me to go for a blood test. I asked her was it urgent and she replied no just when you can. So I had the day off work so decided to get it done the same day, 2 hours later I get a call to get to AnE we think your diabetic. A 4 hour wait in hospital then a hour with a doctor, then was given a blood monitor a pack of novomix 30, told to give 4units in a morning with food 4 at night and given another appointment in 2 weeks time. Right well I'm 7 months on had about 5 appointments plus eye test feet ect. And I'm still none the wiser other than to stay off the sugar and try to keep my blood within 5-10. I'm still eating like a race horse but still losing weight but slower, I guess my question is, is there anymore help out there! Has my muscle mass decreased whilst being undiagnosed meaning I need to get in the gym but if I go the gym I have to change eating pattern to substitute for the exercise.. Tia

Welcome to the forum, Louie!
As a Type 2 I can't really help much, but giving your post a bump up.
@Matt Cycle , @Northerner might have much more of a clue than me on the exercise front.
Are you still on a mixed insulin and fixed units, or are you carb counting now?

Agree wanting to know what insulin is now and is the dosage still the same (because No Way Pedro should a Type 1 be left on any mixed insulin except as a temporary emergency measure) and in any case - what results are you getting on your meter, PLUS you should by now have had another 'armful' of blood tests, one of which is the HbA1c test, so what's the result of that test? Have you had a load of other tests, or not?

Hi @Louieclark7790 and welcome. I definitely would advise getting your insulin changed too, I was on mixed insulins for the 1st 4 months and it is very difficult to exercise as you have to eat more to counteract the hypos on fixed doses. Also you can't be very flexible about what or when you eat and I was 26 and at an age when I was constantly at other people's weddings, Christenings etc and I felt miserable having to snack beforehand to avoid a hypo then not being able to try all the cakes and puddings at a party!

Things got so much better when I changed to MDI - multiple daily injections, where you can adjust your insulin for the amount of carbs you eat (don't assume it's just about avoiding sugar - bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc all raise your glucose too!) and you can reduce your basal insulin on days when you exercise. Recently I changed to a pump which gives me even more flexibility. Also you say you're trying to keep BG betwene 5-10 which is good, but is that just testing before morning and evening meals? I thought I was doing well with this too then when I tried measuring in between meals and got readings of 15 or more! I was horrified! Changing to injecting a quick acting insulin before each meal really helped with this, I felt loads better!

I'd recommend doing some reading on modern insulin regimes - if you can get hold of a copy of https://www.amazon.co.uk/Diabetes-Children-Adolescents-Adults-Health/dp/1859591531 it's well worth it, I learnt loads! Then go to your GP and ask to be referred to a diabetes clinic (not sure if you're being seen there already?) and ask to change your insulin and also to go on a carb counting course too - you really shouldn't have been left the way you are on a mixed insulin and with no information.

Glad you have found us, hope things improve for your soon

Hello @Louieclark7790 and welcome 🙂

The NICE guidance for newly diagnosed Type 1 adults is to use MDI/Basal bolus insulin regimes as the insulin regime of choice and not to use mixed insulins such as the one you mention.

There is good help out there at diabetes clinics and good help on here too. Let us know what if anything has been changed with your insulin and how your control is going.

Hi Louie and welcome to the forum. 🙂 Agree with everyone else mixed insulin for a T1 is rubbish. Your muscle mass will have reduced before diagnosis without insulin circulating. I'm not a gym goer myself and spend most of my exercise time on the bike but in terms of building muscle mass back up again runsweet has lots of guidance on T1 and all sorts of exercise including gym and body building. First thing though is to speak to your diabetic team and get on a better insulin regime.

Welcome Louie from a T1 since England won the world cup. 😉

Welcome Louie. As others have said, you should by now be on Multiple Daily Injections using a basal insulin and also a separate Bolus insulin. Let us know what is happening at present for you.

When newly diagnosed there is a lot to learn very quickly and a lot to take in. There is plenty of experience to access on here and loads of support. If you have any questions at all, just ask. Nothing is considered silly.
