Hi all. Was diagnosed with T2 last month and had my first appt with the diabetes nurse today. Random glucose of 8.4 and my hba1c was 56. I wasn’t started on metformin but was prescribed 1.25mg of Ramipril as my blood pressure is a tad high.

I first went to the GP as I thought I was perimenopausal so it’s taken quite the turn lol. Cholesterol and everything else is fine.

It’s a lot of info to take in initially. So I’ll start with the basics and watch my portion sizes.

Look forward to chatting with you all and maybe somewhere down the line I can offer advice too 🙂

This is a good link with good explanation and some ideas for modifying your dietary regime, menu plans to suit various tastes and budgets.
I followed the principals rather than the actual meal plans but it was successful in reducing my blood glucose and is now my new way of eating.
Good that you have been given opportunity without medication, but do make sure you get a repeat HbA1C in 3 months to check the measures you are taking with your diet is being successful.

I have another hba1c check up booked for January 2024 which will be the 3 month mark since my last one. So it’s all good. I’m excited to get started and see what I can do off my own steam.

Sorry you’ve had to join us, but glad you are here. Diabetes can be fickle and confusing to live with, and there are a variety of different approaches that can work well for different people which can make it seem like advice is confusing and contradictory - because there’s no one single approach that works for everyone. So it becomes more a matter of trying things out and seeing what works well for you as an individual, and what you can sustain over the long term.

Sounds like you are off to a great start with watching portion sizes. While there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. That doesn’t mean you have to aim to avoid those entirely, but as you’ve already said, getting the portion sizes right for your particular metabolism is a very powerful strategy.
