Welcome to the forum. A bit more about your diagnosis will help people make appropriate comments, how did you come to be diagnosed and what is your HbA1C and have you been prescribed any medication as that will indicate how much work you will need to do.
Lifestyle changes in modifying your diet and increasing exercise, brisk walking is good will help.
Have a look at this link as that will give you some ideas for making some dietary changes.

Same as me then.
I was morbidly obese, I lost 5 stone on a low fat diet, and a shake based Newcastle Diet and turned it around.

I was diagnosed at 65, I just stopped eating the high carb foods I was told were healthy and went back to meat, fish, seafood, eggs, cheese and full fat dairy. I eat twice a day, including stir fries, salad and low carb veges, some berries from time to time, two meals a day and I feel absolutely fine. I keep finding all my clothes are too big though.
I do go out with morris sides though - but I don't think it is obligatory.

Welcome to the forum @NikkiG51

Sorry to hear diabetes has joined the party for you. :(

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. Try not to be disheartened about your diagnosis, many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a catalyst which prompted them to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years.

Have you been trying to lose weight before? Are there any options that have worked for you? Or are you coming to this with a blank sheet of paper?

We have lots of members who have found their own ‘toolkit’ for getting their blood glucose levels more in range and shedding a few pounds, but it seems to be a very individual mix. Some find low calorie works well, or a weight loss programme like Weight Watchers or Slimming World, while others have more success with a low carb menu.

You have to find a system that works for you 🙂

That is a really good start with the weight loss and as you are only just in the diabetic zone then the changes to your diet should help.
Just be careful with fruit as some fruits are pretty high carb, bananas, grapes, being the worst offenders with apples, pears, plums being somewhere in the middle and berries being the lowest.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a really good resource for giving the carb values of various portions of a whole range of foods so it helps you in making better choices, also a good digital scales sitting on the work top to weigh portions until you get your eye in with it as some foods can be deceptive.
All meats, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy with veg and salads are good options and you can still have tasty meals.

The metformin will help your body use the insulin it is producing more effectively but dietary changes will be as if not more important. It is often better taken with your main meal as taking with food helps with any stomach issues some people do get if that becomes a problem for you.

The nurse told me to take it with my first meal of the day ...is it better to have later then with my main meal . I really don't want any stomach upsets lol xxxx

I think it is because it is suggested to take it with a 'substantial' meal which for most people tends to be their evening meal.
As it does not act directly on the food you eat and if you have no problem with taking it in the morning then I wouldn't worry and carry on with what you are doing.
