Hi All,

I have been newly diagnosed with type 1 after going into DKA, I just need some advice please & will ring the helpline to get some clarity too. Right now I am injecting 1 unit of Fiasp for 4g of carbs with the aim my BS will return to pre food levels after 2 hours - my question is should I be concerned about what is happening within that 2 hours after I have eaten? Should my levels not rise above 10 in that 2 hour window? Or are they okay to raise above 10 but need to come down within the 2 hour window? If levels are not below 10 after 2 hours is that when I should begin correction dosing? Bit confused by it and would appreciate any advice thanks

Welcome @Hak92 🙂 No, you shouldn’t be worried about what’s happening in those two hours. Your blood sugar will probably spike up but then come back down and that’s ok.

Thank you! I was finding that confusing & was stacking insulin as I was spiking up to 14/15 within the two hour frame and then having a hypo due to the stacking, hoping I get the hang of this soon!

@Hak92 As you’re very recently diagnosed, your main aims are to avoid DKA and avoid hypos. That latter one is probably most relevant now you’re on insulin. It’s much better to proceed cautiously with the insulin doses for safety. Also, if your blood sugar comes down too quickly, it can occasionally cause damage to the eyes.

You certainly shouldn’t be doing correction doses so early on as you really don’t want to risk a bad hypo. You’re probably still making some insulin of your own which often kicks in a while after a meal and sometimes too aggressively (too late, too much). If you added external insulin to this in the form of a correction dose, you could suffer a hypo.

There are a couple of books often recommended for Type 1s here:

Think Like a Pancreas’ by Gary Scheiner.

And Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas (ignore the title - it’s great for adults too).

14 or 15 is fine! Please, please don’t worry about reaching numbers like that. You only need to worry if you’re high teens or more (because you might have ketones at those numbers).
