Newly Diagnosed!! It’s all a bit scary ...

Thanks for the correction Jenny - I hadn't realised that, I've not heard of type 1s being on Metformin as anything other than a temporary measure.

Hello Claudia, and welcome 🙂

I was in my 40s when I was diagnosed - a lot of type 1s here were diagnosed as adults, but people often assume that anyone diagnosed as an adult is type 2, so I'm glad your notes are clear about you being type 1.

It's early days yet, and as Jenny says they are probably taking it slowly and steadily to begin with so your levels don't plummet too rapidly, but in the longer term I hope they will put you on MDI (multiple daily injections) instead of the much less flexible 2 injections a day, and also take you off the Metformin. With MDI you'll be able to manage your diabetes much better and it will fit in better with your job, as it will enable you to eat what you like when you like rather than eating to fit in with your insulin.
Thanks that’s good to have in mind as I go forward and talk to them and ask questions as I seem to be brimming with questions at the moment. Today I am down to blood glucose level of 14 which is my lowest yet. I seem to have totally lost my appetite tho and am having to really concentrate on making sure I eat as I’m told too. It’s a bit ucky. Is that normal as a newbie do you think ? They did talk at my review yesterday of maybe moving to 3 injections daily soon rather than just the 2. Time will tell I guess eh 🙂 I have another review next week so will be interesting to see how I am going. Thanks for all the support ! It’s aaaaaawesome 🙂

Thanks. I didn’t know that. I’ll keep an eye on it and will discuss at my review next week. It’s weird as I think about food but have no desire to eat at all. Never had that issue ever !

I think it's also quite common for people who've been put on fixed insulin not to want to eat set amounts or at set times in order to fit in with their insulin - that can be a real effort. But not wanting food at all seems more likely to be a Metformin issue - it has a bit of a reputation for causing unhappy insides!

Hi there 🙂
Yes I have had a bit of a crook stomach but it is defo settling down. I have read about the sometimes lovely (not) side effects of Metformin... yuk.
I’m just feeling very odd about food at the moment. It’s bizarre not having an appetite and feeling a bit regimented but hopefully hopefully going forward this will change !

Well now Claudia - I am now going to ask you a very relevant question I haven't asked before, it could sound rude so I didn't! - do you perchance need to lose weight? Simply being overweight or becoming overweight, can cause Insulin Resistance for Type 1s whereas it's usually more a feature of Type 2, even when they aren't overweight. So - the first line attack for those diabetics is to add Metformin - which actually was originally marketed as a weight-loss drug, then all the doctors noticed that it improved their overweight diabetic patients on it, BG and control!

Hi there 🙂
I could maybe do with losing 5kg but an a good weight. I’ve lost a few kilos in the last 2 weeks so I am going to have to be careful. I didn’t know that metformin was originally a diet pill ?! Wow !

Like Clockwork Dodo I had not realised that metformin might be used for T1, but if that is the cause of your loss of appetite it would be good to query the need for it.

Over here T1s are now usually put on Multilple Daily Injections (MDI) , rather than the two a day. The MDI means that you can learn to match your insulin to what you choose to eat, rather than having to match your food to the Injections morning and evening. Well worth asking about this as it makes life so much more flexible.

It does sensibly take time to get levels down after diagnosis, and there is so much to take in at the start. As TW said there are absolutely no silly questions on here. Just lots of people wh are happy to help out.

PS love Kaikoura when we visited there.

Hi !
I have my next review on Tuesday morning so am going to ask lots of questions about the metformin and the insulin. They did say I may go onto flexible injections but not at the moment.
Early days I guess. Blood glucose levelsare slowly coming down. I was 12.4 this morning. I was almost excited lol ! 🙂

Yay glad you loved Kaikoura. I’m a Wellingtonian and am hoping to go home to visit in April next year all going well 🙂

Thank you for the support.

Te Papa Museum is still the best I have ever been to. So eclectic. We went our separate ways and rendezvoused every two hours, and managed to while away the entire day.
