Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi. Im looking for some advice please. I am recently diagnosed as diabetic type 2 in the past month and am diet controlled atm, although im not testing my blood sugars atm so not sure what these are doing. the past 2 days i have passed out and lost consciousness. I saw a GP yesterday morning regarding sundays episode and she advised i had likely had hyperglycaemia and was now needing medication to treat my diabetes. I passed out again yesterday afternoon and spoke to a different GP yesterday afternoon, but he has said its impossible to pass out from diabetes if I am not on medication for it so he doesnt think its related to my diabetes at all. Im just wondering if this is correct? I have been extremely drowsy and thirsty the past 2 days. I have another blood test booked in to check my levels but its not for a few more weeks yet. I've never passed out before, and have now done it twice in 24hrs so as you can imagine im really worried and dont know what to do! Im going back in to see a different GP later this morning and want to be prepared X

Sounds like you are hyper, = high blood glucose, the tiredness and raging thirst are a big indicator, no idea about the passing out though, your going to need a doctor for that

Yes I am seeing a doctor later today, its just 1 doctor has told me i passed out because of the Hyper, and one doc said that its impossible to pass out from diabetes unless youre on medication which Im not! So I dont know who to believe or what to think!

What he probably means is that if on meds which lower blood glucose so you are going hypo (low blood glucose) rather than Hyper (high blood glucose). I think it could be possible when levels are at the extremes in either case.
But in your situation not knowing what your levels are it is difficult to say and may be something totally unrelated to diabetes so you need to see the G P asap.

If you are not able to test your blood glucose levels then the GPs are just guessing - the concept of being able to control diabetes by diet depends on knowing what you can eat without raising your levels too much - so maybe the first thing would be to request a prescription for testing equipment, or finding a cheap to use one to buy and finance yourself, so you have some idea of your situation particularly with you passing out.

Hi AislynM, welcome to the forum.

Really sorry to hear about your experience. It does seem like there's been a bit of miscommunication so I'm glad you've gone for a second opinion.

Although you're controlling things with diet, testing can really help to understand how things are going so it's worth getting a blood glucose monitor from Amazon, the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 are popular on the site.

If your blood sugar is dangerously high (Ketoacidosis) you may well pass out and go into a coma. Anyone who passes out with high blood sugar should have a meter check and go immediately to A&E if into the high 20s or above.

Go visit a&e they would give you a full work over including a bg test, as you've passed out twice be it from high sugars or something else a&e would be you best call. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Yes as the others have said you need a meter to understand what’s going on. The mantras for T2s in Control are ‘Test,Test,Test’ and ‘Eat to your meter’. You need to know how potatoes, rice, bread, flour, pastry, pasta and other Carbs affect your blood glucose. And also your meter will tell you what portion size ( very important) of those you can cope with. Don’t listen to any Doc or Nurse who tells you that you don’t need to test. And don’t get too hung up on sugar, it’s only involved because it’s a rapid acting Carbohydrate.
There’s Hyperglycemia (high) and Hypoglycemia (low). As has been said you can probably faint with both. And in the early days of T2 you can suffer from Reactive Hypoglycemia even if you are not on meds or insulin.
