Hi there

Tell us a bit about yourself, so we can be more helpful to you.

A good place to start is looking at what you eat and trying to reduce the carbohydrates you are eating. It's things like pasta, rice and potatoes cause most of us trouble - not just sugar.

We're a friendly bunch, so don't be afraid to ask anything!

i am overweight, and at the moment do not do alot of exercise. I work in a call centre so am sat down for most of the day. Still waiting to have the 2 classes to help with information but these are not until August and feel like I need to start doing something now. My dad has type 2 diabetes as well and manages his with medication, I have decided to try the exercise & diet before taking any medication. I have now changed to brown bread" rice & pasta but don't eat much of these, I prefer to cook from scratch where possible.

Hello and welcome to the forum Debs. 🙂 Did they give you a meter?

Hi debs and welcome :D

Hello to Debs.

Slow down Debs, no need to instantly do much at all.

Think about how you can take easy precautions for now, avoid the obvious bad stuff ( if you eat any) things like Mars bars or tonnes of cake. Drink cordials rather than pop, try to not eat chips etc.
As for exercise it really doesn't need to be drastic as yet. Just go for a twenty minute stroll in the fresh air.

As you learn about stuff in here you will gather that a meter is a golden must have, Codefree are quite popular or try cadging one off your DN. All will become clearer when you start using it. We are all different so require different intakes of this that and the other, it's no big deal really.

Just stick around and ask if in doubt,,, you will see.

Hey,,, Rome wasn't built in a day !!

I am so confused and don't know where to start.
Hi Debs...wondering how much you know about diabetes...what information you've been given by your GP or DSN (diabetes nurse)..if you have seen a nurse yet?...as said it would certainly help if you could tell us a little more about yourself...how you came to be diagnosed...when that was...do you know what your blood sugar results were...this would be the blood test you had that diagnosed your diabetes...early days for you yet...so good advice to slow down a little...lots of information available on diabetes...what to eat...how to lower your BG levels...it can be a little overwhelming...confusing... intimidating at times...if you could answer those questions that would help members give appropriate advice...make the right suggestions...the meter mentioned is used to test your blood at home...before & after meals...it will demonstrate what effect the food you are eating has on your BG...that may be information overload for you at the moment...we can always come back to that later...diabetes is manageable...with the right approach...the right routine...you need to find what suits you best...some here manage perfectly well with diet & exercise only...that can be done...so don't rush...if you have any specific questions...post them here...someone will know the answer...suggest a way to deal with any issues you have...good luck...keep us updated...be good to hear your progress.

Hi Ditto, no they have not even mentioned anything about a meter xx
The Codefree is the best one imho, and the strips are inexpensive on ebay etc. They tell us not to measure but how would we know what foods to eat and which to give up? I just don't know! Take it slow and you'll get there. 🙂
