Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi just joined up here on the recommendation of my doctor. Been diagnosed with type 2, and to be honest it was almost a relief after convincing myself that my cancer had returned.

My doctor has been really good, and I've already had my referals to the diabetic clinic and the eye screening.

The thing confusing me is the food. I'm on metformin and it's completely killed my appetite. I'm overweight so I know losing weight will be good, but I'm not sure the best thing to eat. I'm a real chocaholic but have completely stopped chocolate and sweets. When I do eat something, it makes me so tired I physically can't move. I'm not sleepy tired, just physically my body has no energy which is hard as I am alwas busy !

I haven't been told to test blood sugars etc but have to go back to the doctors in a month for a checkup.

Will be going through the forums for lots of advice.

Hi Syl and a warm welcome nice to hear you have such a proactive doctor and recommending this place as well wow good work there.Have a good browse and start a new thread anytime about anything we are all here to help x

Hi Syl, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear that your GP has been very proactive, a good GP is worth their weight in gold! There is a lot to learn, and diabetes can be very complex at times, because it is a very individual condition and what works for one person may not work for another. There are some common principles thought, and I am sure you will pick these up quickly. The main thing to remember is that diabetes is all about carbohydrates, and the rate at which they convert to glucose in the blood thus increasing levels. Chocolate is one type of carb, but so are bread, rice, pasta, potatoes. You may not realise but white bread can actually incerase your blood sugar levels faster than sugar! The best type of diet to follow is one which combines foods to release their glucose slowly - have a look at the following for some suggestions of 'GL' Diet books:

Your levels will still be on the high side after your diagnosis and whilst your medication begins to take effect, so this will be contributing to your tiredness. Also, many people experience side effects from metformin, but these usually dissipate in a week or two. If not, then there are alternative versions that some peolple tolerate better, such as Glucophage SR, so do ask your doctor if the effects persist. It would definitely be worth getting a meter so you can monitor your reaction to different foods and retain flexibility in your diet. The strips are expensive, which is often why doctors are reluctant to prescribe them. However, I'd suggest reading this advice from Diabetes UK:

Also, a must have book is Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - highly recommended as an excellent introduction to Type 2 🙂

Hi Syl
Welcome to the Forum. I am newly diagnosed as well and I really don't know what I would do without this Forum.

Welcome ! There are so many friends on here that give such wonderful support , you'll soon feel at home.
I was diagnosed type 2 last October and it is still a voyage of discovery - getting a bit easier though

Enjoy your time on this message board , one of the few things to be grateful for after diagnosis !!

Hi Syl and welcome 🙂

Best of luck with your dietary juggling.

Rob

Hi Sylv and welcome.

You said that you're a chocoholic. Just because you've got diabetes doesn't mean that you can eat chocolate again. I've found that the better quality dark chocolate doesn't spike me at all. Whereas any type of potato with skin on, porridge, full sugar yogurts all have adverse effects. Like Northerner has pointed out, we're all individuals and it just takes patience and time to work out what works best for you.

Welcome to the forum.

Donna 🙂

Hi Syl and welcome - it will take a bit of getting used to but things will fall into place. If you have any questions then don't be afraid to ask as there will probably be someone who can help you or if not push you in the right direction.

hi thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome. I think the key for me is being organised with the food. The labelling is all so confusing as I have been eating low-fat foods to bring my weight down, but so much of it is so high in sugar. CONFUSED !!! 😡

Manufacturers are very sneaky! You'll get there! After a while you become familiar with the terminology and what to look out for/avoid 🙂

Watch out for corn starch which is a hidden nasty in low fat products!
