Anyone have any advice or information about trying to loose weight whilst managing type one, I’ve been diagnosed 3 weeks now and have put on over a stone! I’ve been tracking, gymming and cutting out the bad stuff too! Guess I just want some reassurance that it’s just a temporary thing that soon balances out?

Generally, yes. Presumably just before you were diagnosed you were losing weight quite quickly? That's common, anyway, and once you have insulin again you should expect to regain that weight.

Longer term you can expect to control (or fail to control 🙂) your weight in the normal ways, so primarily by controlling your diet. (Though with the extra challenge of managing your blood glucose.)

Hi AmyHull11, welcome to the forum.

It can take a little while before things settle down so hopefully, your body will find it's balance once your numbers stabalise.

Do keep an eye on things though and feel free to mention it to your doctor if you don't see an improvement.

One of the things that points to a Type 1 diagnosis is weight loss but when insulin is introduced people regain the lost weight, however it sounds as if what you are saying is you have put on more weight than you want to, this can be because the insulin regime is not quite right and people are having to eat more carbohydrate to avoid hypos.
Hopefully once you have learnt how to adjust your insulin dose for the amount of carbs you want to eat then your weight will also stabilise.
If you are concerned about this you should speak to your diabetic team for advice about your insulin regime.
What insulins are you taking?

Hi Amy and welcome to the forum.

Can you tell us what insulins you are using, as this can help us in our responses to your questions.
Most people are started straight on to a Basal (background insulin that deals with the glucose your body releases to keep you ticking over) /Bolus (quick acting insulin to match the carbohydrates you choose to eat).

It takes time for your body to settle down after diagnosis, and your team will work with you to make initial adjustments to doses. It is common to start on fixed doses for each insulin and then to gradually adjust these to suit you. If you are having to eat extra snacks because your levels are going to low that can lead to weight gain, but it indicates that your insulin doses need a tweak. Talk to your team.

After a while they will teach you how to alter your Bolus (meal time) dose and also to know when you need to change your basal insulin dose. It is all a lot to take in at the start and not unusual to regain weight lost before diagnosis (I lost 1 1/2 stone in the week before mine), but as @Bruce Stephens says ince things settle we can eat a normal healthy diet and make appropriate choices, we just have the added bit of working out how much insulin to give as well.

Keep in touch and keep the questions coming. Nothing is considered silly on here and there is a wealth of experience to tap into. Just ask.
