Hi everyone!
A few weeks ago I took my son to docs because of constant headaches and thirst, two weeks later he was taken into hospital and diagnosed with type one diabetes! Wow, didnt see that coming at all!! We dont know anyone with diabetes so its all new to us, I have four children all fit and healthy so this was a real shock, We have been home for a week now and things are running smoothly. My son seems to have taken it in his stride though he has had a few wobbles. I cant help worrying about when he goes back to school.
Glad I found this website, sooooo much info 🙂

Thankyou 🙂
He is having novorapid with breakfast lunch and dinner and levemere at bedtime. thanks for the links I will check them out, Im grateful for any help I can get as you can imagine.

Similar to me although I have lantus instead of levemir. Have you been told bout carb counting? It's a way to match insulin doses to the carbohydrate content of food consumed and makes things much easier and more flexible 🙂

No havent been told about the carb counting yet although the diabetes nurse did say she would talk us through it all at some stage, we have only been home for a week and they didnt want to over load us with info, it all sounds so complicated. Sometimes I wonder if Im ever going to manage to cope with it all!!!

Hi jojo. Welcome. 🙂

Sounds like he's coping well although most people, young or old, go through a greiving process and can often bottle up the feelings and emotions generated, so keep an eye out for him and maybe chat about it if you can.🙂

I remember thinking I was laid back about it all but looking back I can see I could have done with a good few chats.🙄

Definitely buy the Ragnar Hanas book. It is excellent.🙂

You will, you've already made a terrific start by tapping into what's known as the 'Diabetic Online Community'. Lots to learn, but lots of invaluable help available and inspiring stories of people who have achieved marvellous things - diabetes does not need to stand in the way of any achievements for your son 🙂

Yes, your right I will cope! Just like everyone else does, its just so daunting!
I am determined to try to keep things as normal as possible, Its been a bit of a struggle to get him to go out and about, he worries about where to do jabs and such, also I think hes scared of having a low, though thats very unlikly as his result is usually near the twenty mark!!! I have four children so routine is a big plus!

Thanks Rob,
Yes he is a laid back young man, but not a big talker! I thought he was cool with it all and then he mentioned to me that King Henry V111 died from diabetes!! Thats when I realised that he was really worried about the whole thing bless him!! He comes with me now when I take the dog for a walk so we can have a chat about anything thats worrying him, and get it into perspective!!!

Hi Jojo and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi, I like you have 4 children and my daughter was diagnosed at the age of 3, she is now 12. Things must seem so hard now but I promise it does get better. Every day is a balancing act but it just becomes a way of life for all your family. Aimee doesn't let diabetes stop her from doing anything!, its amazing how they adapt and except their condition.
Being newly diagnosed do you know you can claim DLA and carers allowance, (if you don't earn over a certain amount of money.) We were told about the DLA but I didn't fine out about the carers allowance until years later. It has been a god send for us as I had to stop working full time when Aimee was diagnosed.😛

Welcome to the forum Jojo. As one of those around here who went through what he's going through I know what it's like. But there are plenty of better examples out there than King Henry. If he's looking for a few more modern examples you can point him to ex England footballer (yeah I know he used to play for Tottenham) Gary Mabbutt, Sir Steve Redgrave (if you can get a gold medal with type 1 you can do anything!), and then there is Team Type 1 the bicycle race team (great news that they recently said they are in next years Tour de France!). While being diabetic can rear it's head from time to time, he can do anything 🙂

While on my DAFNE course not long back was with a 16 year old who was having a hard time. She was kind of believing it didn't exist/doing the teeny "it doesn't matter" thing, which was causing her no end of problems with getting her hospitalised with DKA incredibly often. She really did make us all worry for her. But it does become utterly depressing the endless blood tests and injections we go through and reading a recent study by one of the hospitals the sheer number of holes we poke in ourselves does seem to constantly grind people down.

And keep the faith yourself. He sounds like he will adapt, and you will yourself 🙂 A learning spell at first, but once past that nothing much else is needed as once the carb counting and the ratio's down there's no special diets or anything (sheesh am sounding like a DAFNE advert here hehe) it's all about knowing what's in what he eats. Nothing here stopping him getting that Mcdonalds or whatever. We can do anything, we just need to know what it is we're taking in and adapting to it. And that will come with time and am sure you'll both be fine 🙂

I agree with my mam, diabetes was hard at first but then i knew i had to live with it as i got older and it doesnt really stop me doing anything, i am on the basal bolus routine. 🙂
