Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi!

My mum has been newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes but is also underweight. Can any one suggest a diet or what kind of food she can eat to increase her weight fairly quickly.

having always struggled to loose weight I can't offer much advice on that score. the medication being used will make a difference, but I can't be more specific.

It takes a while to get into a routine with the tablets and eating. The best suggestion I can make is to talk to her GP or the Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN) and be reffered to a dietician.

Welcome to the forums. I hope you'll get lots of help.

Hi Andy, welcome to the forum! It's a misconception that people only get diabetes (particularly Type 2) if they are overweight - many ar, but by no means all. The problem is that most of the advice is geared up to helping people lose weight rather than put it on - I know, because I was severely underweight at diagnosis and couldn't really find good advice about putting weight on.

Has your mum been given an appointment to see a dietician? That's probably the best approach, as she will need to know how various foodstuffs will affect her blood sugars, so the diet will vary from person to person. I found that, just by eating a healthy, balanced diet and looking after myself, I gradually put weight on and am now at my ideal weight.
