hello all my son has type 2 and they want to put him on tabs not too happy about that as want to try diet first do we have a choice or must he go on the tabs we are tryin to do diet aand readin down to between 12 and 8 the nurse wants his first count to be a 4 i am new and i am tryin to find out as much info as possible🙂

Hi and a big welcome to the forum nice to meet you, how old is your son ? x

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 A 4 is a little on the low side I would say, if the nurse means the result of a fingerprick test. Obviously, we don't know the full details of your son's situation, but it may be that he starts initially on tablets, but is then able to come off them later as his levels improve - several of our members have achieved this.

p.s. I moved this out to its own thread so it wouldn't get lost 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum.🙂

When the GP said level 4 - did they mean level 4 every time he tests or level 4 when you have your 3 monthly check.🙂Bev

If he wants to join up here he's more than welcome 🙂 Tell him not to get too stressed about things - diabetes is not a great diagnosis to get, but fortunately it is something that you can learn to live with and manage successfully. Many people find that the diagnosis gives them the motivation to improve their diet and lifestyle and actually end up with much healthier, more active lives than they had before, so there is plenty of hope for the future 🙂

Welcome to the forum! 🙂

I am one of those who are currently entirely diet and exercise controlled.

However, when diagnosed, I was started on gliclazide and then metformin. For me, they worked perfectly and kick-started my improved levels.

I was able to stop taking the metformin after losing a bit of weight and completely reorganising my lifestyle (e.g. regular meals with more sensible portions coupled with regular exercise). Fortunately for me, it looks like I'm still producing a reasonable amount of insulin and my problem was insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is where the body cannot use insulin properly and this causes the blood glucose levels to rise. It is commonly a side effect of being obese, which I was.

Andy 🙂

No, metformin is not a diet pill. It helps the body make use of the insulin it produces and thereby helps reduce the glucose levels in the blood. In theory, metformin also suppresses the appetite, but I did not notice that particularly when I was on it.

Does your son experience any side effects? If he is, then it might be worth going back to the GP to discuss the alternatives. The most common side effects are usually stomach upsets and wind and they are normally just a nuisance rather than 'dire'.

Your son sounds like he is doing very well though! 🙂
