Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi there, I'm new to this website but certainly not new to diabetes. I was diagnosed with type I diabetes in 1983 at the age of 6. I have always been well conrolled until this last year. I am 34 years old in a couple of weeks and for the first time I feel utterly useful in the control of my sugar levels. I am losing all faith in myself and my ability to take care of myself.
I am calling out for help...in absolute desperation.
Many thanks Vickiree :(

Hi Vickiree, welcome to the forum 🙂 We have lots of members here who have been diagnosed a similar length of time to you, who have also suffered their ups and downs, so hopefully they can share their experiences with you. What insulin regime are you on, and what particular problems have you been experiencing? Sometimes when we think we've got it cracked, the Diabetes Fairy likes to totally undermine our faith in ourselves :( Don't lose hope though - lots of friendly supportive people here will do their best to listen and help 🙂

Hi vickiree. Welcome 🙂

As Northerner says, you are not alone !

I spent 30 odd years hoping and guessing (and getting away withmost of it) but the time came when my body needed a bit more care and attention, so I joined this forum.

I've learnt way more than I ever did in the previous 3 decades and am now far more in control. That said, there are still good days and bad days. But at least I have a better idea why.

Feel free to ask anything.🙂

Rob

Welcome from me.........🙂

None the less, you will find all the help and support you need here....:D

Welcome to the forum! Whereabouts are you based and which hospital are you under? What regime are you on?

Sorry to hear you are struggling - we'll do the best we can to help 🙂 I'm Siobhan, 22, t1 for 20 years.

Welcome Vickiree. Might be time for some revision of treatment etc. Depends on your insulin regime (bimodal / MDI), adminstration method (syringe / pen / pump), carbohydrate counting & dose adjustment etc.

There are courses like DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) or local substitutes - you'll have to ask your GP, or more likely, your diabetes clinic. If you don't attend a specialist clinic (with diabetes consultants, DSNs [diabetes specialist nurses], dieticians, podiatrists etc), then first stage if to ask your GP to refer you. If there's no DAFNE course local to you, Bouremouth have put theirs online for anyone to access.

There are also specialist online groups for sports and mountain activities with diabetes, if they're of interest to you?

Anything else, just ask here -sometimes we can help here, sometimes we can suggest other places to get further information / advice.

Hi VickiRee

Welcome to the forum.

Another reasonably long-timer (dx 1991) who has transformed their control thanks to info and support from the Diabetic Online Community in the last year or so.

Have you got a particular ongoing problem that you just can't seem to crack?

M

Welcome to the forum Vickiree 🙂 x

Thank you sooooooooo much!

Thank you all so much for all of your replies. I checked my original message again today expecting nothing and I have so many messages. It really has helped me to realsie I am not alone.
It's my Birthday today and I've just spent the last hour crying my eyes out because I feel so out of control of my body. PLUS I put on my jeans and couldn't get them above my hips....very depressing!

To all those interested in my insulin and problems I've been having (I am so desperate for help) I am on Humalog and Lantus. I have just moved to Winchester and am seeing a brilliant Diabetic Care team here. I speak to my Diabetic Nurse on the phone weekly, although nothing has improved as yet.

I have put on almost a stone in the last year and am desperately trying to lose weight, plus I suffer from IBS and can barely eat any Carbohydrates...yet I still put on weight. I work out every morning for half an hour which shoots up my sugar levels and then I find that I am starving in the afternoon with a low level of 2 or 3!

I feel so much better for just wrting this all down.
Does anyone have any advice at all?

You are all fantastic, thank you so much.
Big smiles Vickiree x😱
