I have been diabetic for 8 months a pharmacist is all I have ever spoken to. I am trying the diet route but complicated by other illnesses and lack of mobility. The pharmacist wants me on metformin but I will fight it for a while as it has affect’s that can clash with other stuff.
I’ve taken the liberty of gathering your initial posts together so that any responses can all be kept in the same place, which hopefully will make things easier to follow 🙂
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and that you haven’t found it easy to get time with your Dr or surgery diabetes nurse to get some advice
Were you told the result of your HbA1c? This will be a number above 47, and gives an indication of general glucose concentrations over the past 3-4 months. It can be helpful in understanding the extent to which your metabolism is struggling to cope with carbohydrates in your diet.
What clashes have you heard about Metformin and other meds you are taking? Met is a common first-line medication, and generally well tolerated, though some get short term gastric upset (and a relatively small number find they don’t get on with it at all). There are slow-release versions which can tame any digestive acrobatics, and many find that stomach upsets die down after a few days.
But perhaps you are already dealing with other digestive issues? And it is quite common for people diagnosed with T2 to want to try to turn things around with dietary and lifestyle changes first. 🙂
