Hi all,

I found out two weeks ago I'm likely type 2 - I had blurred vision, leg cramps and felt thirsty all the time. Went to the GP who measured my blood at 26 mmol 😱

I was a little overweight but not fat as I am pretty active, however I did have a very sweet tooth. In the last few months I've lost 8kg which is one positive I suppose.

I was prescribed Metformin and am currently just on 3 per day as of Monday. Was gutted for the first few days, but coming to terms with it now.

Took my own blood measurement on Wednesday after denying myself carbs and sugary stuff from the day I found out and I'm down to 16 mmol

It's heading in the right direction, but when can I expect to be back down to normal levels?

Also struggling with food and yearnings for Pizza and sugary stuff. I found a good cold, fizzy drink substitute in Dr Pepper "Zero" which is awesome - my wife also now has a dedicated driver for nights out.

Best tip so far: - I'm loving M&S unsweetened yoghurts with a bit of Lizzi's Low Sugar Granola as a pudding substitute - posh aren't I? 😉

26 mmols is quite, so a drop down to 16 mmol, in two weeks is good. Metformin does not work immediately and it tends to build up. It is recommended to increase the dose slowly to lessen the unwanted side effects on the digestive system which is common.
 
great feedback thanks, I was on 1 tablet for 5 days, 2 for 5 and am up to 3 tablets for 10 days

Diet is going ok, exercise could be better, but I'm also recovering from a ruptured achilles tendon in the summer which is slowing progress!
 
Hello from another newby with high readings at diagnosis. I have been on 1 met a week, due to go to 2 today. I've got my reading down from 15 on Monday to under 10. I'm also doing low carb but I'm doing intermittent fasting too! So every other day if I'm not hungry about 6pm I go for a 12 hour fast. I just drink tea/water and go to bed early lol! You are doing well to get it down by 10 in 2 weeks.
 
Thanks Grogg - that's not a bad tip actually - I could always do with eating earlier anyway. I like green vegetables which is a plus, but missing fruit juice (evil), honey on toast (evil) pizza and bread generally.

I'm enjoying plain, sugar free porridge and weetabix for breakfast

Tea has replaced a glass of wine or beer in our house, and kudos to my wife who has really embraced and actually quite enjoying our new healthy lifestyle!
 
I'm having Eggs for breakfast as 1 slice of toast increased my readings. I've cut out bread, rice, pasta and all breakfast cereals. I bought an app Carbs and Cals which I record my food on. I aim for less than 20g of carbs.
 
When self testing you've to take a reading before and after eating, so you can see the effect that food has. Your BG will go up and down during the day. Taking several readings a day, every day, will allow you to see patterns. I went highter after breakfast (multi grain hoops or shredded wheat) than I did after lunch or dinner.
