Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi folks, I just wanted to say hi
I have been ignorant to my diabetes, weight and health issues. I am annoyed with myself and sad. I am 62 and find myself in a terrible place. Diabetic 2, Over weight (massively) My metabolic age is 87 High blood pressure, High Colestral and unable to exercise or walk due to stage 4 osteoarthritis in both knees, toes, neck, shoulder and fingers. I get bad cases of gastro and I feel very sad and done for... Diabetes UK is my last chance to stop being ignorant and try to stabilise my health.

Thanks for reading.. I am now exploring the site.. wholly me

Hi Wholly and welcome, recognising you need to change things is a good first step. Best to break down your plans for change into small steps that you can work on changing at a time

Welcome @Wholly 🙂 At least you know where you’re starting from. Don’t dwell on that too much. Just use it as a place from which to improve. I’m sure you can make improvements. Small, steady steps forward is the way to climb the mountain.

Hi @Wholly, and welcome from a fellow T2 who was diagnosed at 61, also very overweight although I didn't have the other complications you are suffering from. I had a very bad back which, as the weight came off, improved massively, but I don't know if that is possible with osteoporosis.

Just to echo @Inka and @Lucyr, it will seem impossible if you try to look at the big picture (well it did to me anyway) so the best way forward is chipping away a day at a time, acknowledging a small win or two. For example if you are cutting down your carbs and normally have 2 slices of toast for breakfast, have just 1 instead along with an egg cooked any way you like. I used to always have either a bacon butty or a bagel for breakfast, now I just have a 2 egg cheese omelette.

And please be kind to yourself...don't berate yourself for being in this condition....our ill health comes on over a long period of time and there is probably no one thing we could have done to stop it. But knowing where you are today, you know you can do something to help yourself. Sending you loads of good luck x

Less weight to carry around will certainly reduce the pain in your knees, even if it does little for your osteoporosis in other parts of your body. There is a Surgeon in Tasmania called Gary Fettke who has a 50% success rate for curing his knee and hip replacement patients with Low Carb only - that's the ones who accept his advice to eat Low Carb. They then don't need the operation.

Welcome to the forum @Wholly

Please do be kind to yourself. There is a lot of blame and stigma in the media surrounding diabetes, but nobody asks for long-term ill health. And reasons behind why one person develops a long-term condition while another (with the same lifestyle) never would are far more complex than is usually acknowledged.

Glad to hear that you want to begin making small, manageable steps towards better health, and improved diabetes management. The friendly forum folks will be behind you every step of the way, encouraging you on.

If you’d like a bit of an ‘information refresher’ you might find it helpful to register for the Learning Zone.

Additionally members here often recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.

Good luck, and keep asking questions. 🙂
