Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is Diane, I live in Poole Dorset, and am new to this site, have been diagnoses with type 2 about 5 years ago, am struggling with very low moods, headaches and motivation. I do not seem to be responding to most of the medications I have been given wondering whether a referral to an endocrinologist is in order ?

Hi @Dsimpson and welcome to the forum.
Have you tried anything else apart from taking medications?
If you look through treads on this forum (or on the other UK Diabetes Forum) you will find that a lot of people have success (often without medication) by either eating fewer carbohydrates or by losing a lot of weight, or both.

Hello @Dsimpson I am in Parkstone and was diagnosed with type 2 in late 2016.
I eat a low carb diet, and that is all I need to do.
Not everyone will respond in the same way, though, as type two seems to be very variable.

Welcome, I’m also in Poole. Do you test your blood sugars at home and what sort of readings are you getting? If you do need a referral then I can reccomend Bournemouth hospital, Poole hospital was okay for diabetes too and some prefer it there, but I get on better at Bournemouth.

I used to in the first months, but that was 5 years ago now and I have been in remission for some time. I check once in a while but see under 7mmol/l these days.
As a type 2 under diet control I don't even get to see a GP and have not seen a nurse for a while - my local surgery is snowed under trying to catch up with essential treatments.
I have heard of a couple of people who's life expectancy is a couple of years now, rather than having treatment for cancers.
As far as I can tell, apart from a nasty reaction to the AZ vaccine a year ago, I am in good health.

thank you for all the replies, I tried diet to begin with for about a year and a half without a positive result, hence onto the medication. I am not overweight so do not need to lose any. me BG runs at between 7 and 9 at the moment and have my HbA1c checked every couple of months but I feel that I am not responding to the treatment as I should be, hence my nurse keeps changing my meds, upping doses etc (metformin, candesartan, truclicity, propanalol) have stopped jardiance because of side effects. and so I plod on !!!

When you say you tried by diet, what are you having for meals as unless you are keeping good watch on the amount of carbohydrates you may be thinking that your 'healthy diet' may not be so for Type 2 diabetes.
If you would like to share some of the meals you have people may spot if there are any problem foods you may be having.

Sorry to hear that you are having a tough time with your diabetes @Dsimpson

Can you remember the result ofyour most recent Hba1c?

Have you ever had your cPeptide measured to see if you are still producing much insulin? There is a slow-onset form of T1 called LADA that comes on later in life and can sometimes be mistaken for T2, which might be worth getting checked for - especially as you were not overweight at diagnosis.

my most recent Hba1c is due Monday not sure what my last one was high 50's I think. not had cPeptide measured but worth raising this with me nurse, will be talking to her on Monday, although there is a genetic element to this as my mother and her mother were diabetic although again maybe LADA will bear this in mind thank you
