Hello I have just been diagnosed Type 2 . Wanting to enquire about metformin it sounds complicated when reading about the side effects.

Hello Denise, welcome to the forum, I have been taking metformin for my Type 2 Diabetes since September 2014 and do not suffer any side effects. If you struggle with side effects, my suggestion would be to discuss this with your GP as there is a slow release version available as required.

As well this forumn, I would strongly recommend getting in touch with your local support group.

Regards.

I could not cope with Metformin and stopped taking it, then realised I did not need it - but it was a few weeks I would not like to go through again.
These days I just eat a low carb diet and have normal numbers, for which I am thankful.

Thank you Tim, I haven't got my meds yet I think the nurse said I will be starting with a low dose . I will look into my local support group .
Regards
Denise

Thank you for your reply. Tim has got on well with it and you haven't , This is what is confusing me I may ask to talk to the nurse again.

Hi Denise, you will start with a low dose at the beginning. I am aiming at remission and looking forward to a time when I am not taking medication. I am 50 in September 2022 and hope to be somewhere near to remission by then.

As you have noticed some people get on with metformin fine, some suffer some stomach issues initially which ease but others are unable to tolerate it but the slow release version suits them Ok. It is recommended to take with food to minimise the effect.
If you really need it, you may be fine but if not then don't put up with any bad side effects for too long.
If your HbA1C is not too high i.e. just in the diabetes zone of over 48mmol/mol then I hope you will be given the opportunity to try by changes to your diet which you will need to do anyway as metformin only helps your body to use the insulin it is producing more effectively but you will still need to reduce your carbohydrate intake as the meds can only do so much.

Hi Denise60, welcome to the forum.

You're going to get a lot of different experiences as everyone is different, as is their diet and diabetic numbers so it will have a different impact on each individual.

The only way to know is to test and see how you get on. The side effects are typically tummy issues, some are fine with it as long as they take the medication with food and the side effects subside after a few weeks.

It is however, possible to get your numbers to a good place as a type two with diet and exercise so worth checking what your HbA1c number was and discussing the options with your nurse.
