At risk of diabetes
Newbie , just had a blood test come back as HbA1c 42. Pre diabetes.. what does everyone have for breakfast!?

Hi and welcome. Breakfast is usually something low in carbs, so best not to have cereals or bread. I personally have a poached egg, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, and the occasional grilled rasher. Sometimes I have 80 gm mixed berries with a dollop of authentic Greek yogurt. Sugary cereals like Frosties should be avoided, but I occasionally have a small bowl of rolled oats or oatbran (20gm), made up with unsweetened almond milk and topped with 40gm blueberries. You will get lots of ideas by looking at the thread "What did you eat yesterday". As you are only just in the pre diabetes range being carb aware and careful should help you back into the non diabetic range. Best wishes

Hi and welcome.

Coffee with real double cream. Cream has less carbs than milk, the fat slows down the digestive system which keeps you feeling full for longer and the fat provides slow release energy and tastes good.
Full fat (same reason as using cream) Greek natural yoghurt with a few berries (rasps, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, sour cherries) some mixed seeds, maybe some chopped nuts and perhaps a sprinkle of low carb (protein) granola. Sometimes I add a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa.
Or eggs are good in all their many ways of cooking. If I have time, a 2 egg omelette with a whole variety of fillings, usually including cheese, mushrooms, onion, peppers, courgette, aubergine ham, spinach) with a big plate of salad and a big dollop of full fat coleslaw.

This morning I had 2 boiled eggs on a high fibre toasted bread
One slice or two? Portion size of carbs is the important thing with diabetes and knowing where the carbs are in your food.

Do you know the carb content of your high fibre toast per slice? The info will be on the label usually in the nutritional info box which will usually list the nutrients in g per 100g and also per slice. Almost always in tiny writing which is such a frustration when diabetes often makes our sight blurry, especially in the early days. You are only interested in the total carbohydrate content not the "of which sugars" because your digestive system will break down all the carbs into glucose.

Hi Scottish-lass here, i am also a newbie and newly diagnosed with pre diabetes...finding it hard to get info re prediabetes and cant find any Prevention programme here in Scotland.
I usually have similar breakfasts to others who have posted - Greek full fat yoghurt (Asda's extra special @ £1.75 for 500g is bit more expensive but is absolutely delicious!!), berries of some sort 75g+ and 10g of mixed seeds or almonds or walnuts OR 20g rolled oats with 150ml semi or skimmed milk and 75g+ of berries with 10g mixed seeds or nuts
Hope folk continue to put on what they've eaten as im v confused about what diet to follow - im doing low carb at the moment in effort to lose weight and keep in prediabetic range
blessings all

If I have breakfast it’s usually one egg, generally coddled with a tiny piece of cheddar in the coddler with the egg. Sometimes I’ll rustle up a couple of scrambled and have it with a little avocado.
I’ve even had steak for breakfast. It’s the cereal companies who’ve persuaded over decades that breakfast should be carb laden sugary foods and it really can be anything.

Welcome to the forum @ABUCH1980

Sounds like you are off to a good start!

As other have said, when managing diabetes it is important to balance the amount of carbohydrate you are eating with your body’s ability to cope (alongside your level of activity and any medication you need). It’s not that you need to try to avoid carbs entirely, but a little bit of portion control can work wonders 🙂

With an HbA1c in the low 40s, it seems likely that some fairly modest tweaks may be all that you need - Many new members find it can be really helpful to keep a brutally honest food diary for a week or two. Note down everything you eat and drink along with an estimate the amount of total carbohydrate (not just ‘of which sugars’) in your meals and snacks. This will give you a good idea of the foods which are the main sources of carbs in your menu. And some of the unexpected corners where they can lurk!

It may also highlight some meals which have a much higher carb load, and where a few swaps and changes, or a smaller portion might really help. 🙂

Im a newbie so be wary of my choices . We have large breakfast . I have
1/4 grapefruit or Alpro sugar free yogurt.
Either poached, scrambled or, boiled egg ;or egg & bacon; kipper ; or smoked haddock ; a piece of wholemeal toast or 2 rice cakes;, benecol spread & marmite or 1/4 tspn orange marmalade.
Its worth noting my weight is 54 kg. I am not having to lose weight. And only supposed to be noting 1 metre reading a day.

Hi.
I'm a newbie on here too having just slipped over into Type 2 after being pre-diabetic for years. Really wish I'd found this site when I was pre diabetic as there seems to be a lot of information and help on here which would have been useful and might have prevented me from my diabetes diagnosis. I had no idea that carbs played such a big role! Thanks to whoever mention the 'what I ate' thread as I'm off to have a look at that right now.

Anyway, I was a toast or cereal girl when it comes to breakfast but this week have swapped to greek yoghurt and berries (which I'm loving) and did have one portion of weetabix with sliced banana. Sadly I struggle with eggs for breakfast but they do seem to be a good choice.

Good luck and do all you can to stay 'pre' diabetic.

Hi, I find breakfast stuff can cause huge swings in blood sugar, so if you can do a reading before you eat and a couple of hours after to see what works for you.

For me, I usually have one of the breakfasts below, with a coffee (decaf or normal):
- porridge with Soya or normal milk, served with some berries
- Apple with two pieces of very heavy dark bread (Polish or German style/"farmers") with either a slice of cheese, or diabetic friendly peanut butter
- if travelling for work and hotel options are limited: eggs. bacon and some fresh fruit, max 1 bit of bread or carbs
- low carb muesli (please do check the labels, some are genuinely low carb others more of a marketing lie)

So far the above have worked quite well, and I am testing some high fibre breakfast cereals at the moment. Coffee I am told can have an effect, so I need to look into that some more.

When I was first diagnosed (type 2) and in hospital, breakfast was basic but ok and was roughly (from memory):
- fruit (apple), two pieces of dark bread with cheese and low fat spread, coffee and a yoghurt.

Sometimes, I add a yoghurt along with it as well but am careful to pick out either Alpro (oo sugar, high protein) or a low carb normal one. A recent Alpro I tried claimed 0g carbs.
