Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I'm Val Thought I would Join got really bad results today, so need to try and get this under control.

Welcome, Val 🙂 How long have you had Type 2? There are lots of otherType 2s here so you’ll get plenty of support and tips. Ask anything you want. No question is too trivial or silly.

Hi @labrador2 and welcome to the forum. What sort of information or advice are you seeking - or do you just want to vent your feelings?
Can you tell us a little about yourself? How bad were your results? Was it a bad HbA1C level? Have you been diabetic for long? What medication you are taking ? What sort of food do you eat? Do you need to lose weight or are you a skinny Type 2?

Welcome to the forum @labrador2

Sorry to year you’ve had results that are troubling.

Feel free to share your struggles and worries here - folks here instinctively ‘get it’. And it can be very helpful to share experiences with others facing the same battles every day.

Ask away with any questions you have. We have literally centuries of lived diabetes experience on the forum, and there are lots of different approaches and strategies that people use to manage their own individual diabetes.

Thank you everyone. My reading was 18.5 midweek. My glickazide has been doubled, I also take Dapaglitzflozin. My big problem is food and drinks. I always drink diet coke, irn bru etc, but have such a sweet tooth, I could eat chocolate all day long and cake. But I'm not a big veggie fan. So in easy speak what can I eat? I'm pretty pathetic as in I have type 2 and was diagnosed about five years ago, but can't seem to get it through my head that my food habits need to change. Also my diet drinks my cousin says no as there is saccharine in these. Is she right ?

Hi and welcome
I think you have taken the first step by recognising your problem areas and joining this Forum. Learning to cut down your sugar intake will be difficult at first, but many of us find that as we persevered, our taste and desire for sweet things lessened. Diet Coke contains saccharine - I've never been a drinker of fizzy drinks so perhaps someone else can make suggestions. I just drink de-caf tea, coffee and water.
Your reading was high, but it's not just sweet things you would be advised to cut back on, but carbs which turn to glucose in the body. That means bread, potato, rice, pasta, processed foods as well as cake, pastries, sweets. I get my chocolate fix with a couple of squares of dark chocolate.
People here have a variety of breakfasts, egg based, or Greek yogurt with berries, but portion controlled. For example, I enjoy a poached egg with grilled mushrooms and tomatoes (no bread) and others have a loaded omelette. You say you don't have many vegetables, but they can be pureed and hidden in things like meat sauce. I make my own soups, or have a salad for lunch, but I do like my veggies. I suggest you look at the post "What did you eat yesterday" for ideas from Type 2 posters. Best wishes

Thank you for your reply. Really just starting to get my head around this. So this is me really starting my journey. Although I have had diabetes for years now, my health is starting to suffer and I do need to make a decision to get myself sorted.

If it is proper Diet Coke it doesn't have saccharine but aspartame and acesulfame K and many people are able to tolerate the 'diet' drinks even if they have artificial sweeteners.
I have flavoured sparkling water which have less than 0.5g carb /100ml as well as diet coke.
There are some good food suggestions from @Felinia but maybe you need to look at vegetables in a different way by adding them to other dishes or having then raw or lightly cooked rather than cooked to death. We all remember as a kid the sprouts put to cook on Christmas eve, enough to put anyone off.
