Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm Den, been diabetic type 2 since approx 2010. Don't really want to bother the doctor with this if you fellow diabetics can help.

I'm wondering if I have peripheral neuropathy as my hands are painful, initially when stretching them, but now it feels like a finger is badly sprained (1st it was my ring finger, now it's my right pinky). The reason I'm unsure is that I don't have any problems at all with my feet, and I thought that's where it starts.

Hope you guys can help 🙂

That sounds slightly more like early signs of Dupuytrens Contracture to me, than neuropathy - but there again I'm not a doctor. Do you have any trouble/pain straightening those fingers? Anyone can have DC, not a complication of diabetes. Anyway - see your GP !

some pain when straightening but not much. some days it's fine. googling DC - i'm not having any other symptoms

Sounds like my problem which l think is carpel tunnel, l did mention it to my diabetic nurse and she agrees

yeah i had thought of that but i don't have numbness in my hands or tingling or pins and needles or a weak thumb or difficulty gripping

Sorry to hear about your painful hand @den57

Might it be worth calling NHS111 to chat things through?

Or possibly the Diabetes UK helpline, who can refer you on to Diabetes Specialist Nurses if clinical advice is required. You can call on 0345 123 2399 (Mon-Fri 9-6)

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Since being diagnosed with Diabetes I have had regular trigger fingers. This is another possibility. This is manifested with a pain in the base of the finger, and then develops into discomfort when straightening the finger, and eventually if triggers and I am unable to straighten it without pulling it up with the other hand. They have responded well to cortisone injections (which reduce the swelling in the tendon which prevents it from sliding through the tube at the base of the finger. I have however ended up having operations over the years to release three fingers and my thumb.

It is worth asking your GP.
