Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm Julie, I was diagnosed with diabetes in September last year. All I was told was to cut out as much sugar as I could. I'm trying so hard, but I'm fed up of feeling sick most of the time and not knowing what I'm doing. All tips greatfuly recieved

Hello Julie and welcome to the forum.
There are many members on the forum that have a great deal of experience of living with Type1 Diabetes.
I will copy in @SB2015 to this message and I'm sure there will be others along soon as well that will try to help you.

Hi @JulieA73 🙂

What insulins do you take and are you counting carbs and adjusting your meal-time insulin to the carbs? It’s very hard to get good control unless you do that.

What are your blood sugar results like? How high and how low are you going? High blood sugars can make you feel rough.

Hi Julie, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear you're struggling and feeling like you're not in control.

What insulins are you on? Were you taught how to carb count and adjust your insulin accordingly? When you manage to get the right insulin-to-carb ratios for your meals, you should feel more confident with your choice of foods. Easier said than done I know! Have you been in regular contact with your diabetes team?

Thank you

Hi, all my diabetic nurse has told me is that I'm diabetic and need to cut out sugar. When I was tested my sugar levels were extremely high. I was also told that all the information I need is on the Diabeties UK website, tbh I don't even know if I'm supposed to test my bloods everyday, I don't know anything about counting cards. I got more information from my optometrist if I'm honest. I just feel so down, I feel sick most of the time, confused about what I'm supposed to be doing and my eye sight has got worse and no one understands how it makes you feel. I'm so glad I've found this forum

Hi, I haven't been given insulin yet, my nurse whats me to try to control it by diet. I started really well and my body responded to a lot less sugar than it was used to. I haven't been told about bloody sugar testing or carb counting and it's so hard getting an appointment with my diabetic nurse at the moment, I feel very lost and confused

Hi, Julie. I'm Type 2 and currently diet-controlled, so it can work for some, but I don't know any Type 1s that are managing their diabetes by diet alone though I'm sure some of them on the Forum will be able to comment. As for the 'less sugar' it's all carbohydrates that are the issue, not just the sugars, so if you've managed to reduce your sugar intake can I ask what you're still eating?

Martin
Hi Martin, I've reduced my intake of bread, pasta and potatoes, sometimes I'll sweet potato instead of normal ones. I don't really know what's counts as high in carbs so I don't really know if what I'm eating is OK. I've been eating wholewheat cheerios for breakfast, sometimes I change and have a slice of toast with scrambled egg. I'm just so confused at the moment. I'm going to try again this week to get an appointment with my nurse. Any advice is appreciated

Thank you Martin, that's really helpful. I've never seen low carb bread, I'll have a look next time I'm out shopping. Thank you again

Ok, that sounds more like Type 2 diabetes. Or possibly what’s called Type 1.5 (it’s between the two types). How were you diagnosed? Could you actually be Type 2? It would be worth checking for your own peace of mind and so you know how things will progress.

The advice you’ll get here will often differ depending on the type of diabetes you have. No diet will ever cure Type 1 but diet can help with Type 2.

I went to the doctors because I was constantly thirsty and going to the bathroom and I knew they are 2 signs to look out for. The diabetic nurse sent me for a fasting blood test and my blood levels came back really high

Absolutely right - excessive thirst and weeing are two important signs. They’re very unpleasant symptoms too. How high was your fasting blood sugar when the nurse took it? Do you know if she also tested for ketones? (She could have done this with a blood meter or with a urine sample).

Type 1 diabetes CANNOT be treated with diet only. They had to do it before insulin treatment was made possible and so Type 1s all died, because it was literally a starvation diet.

My blood levels came back at 86, I think she done a full blood health test, ie cholesterol and other things but I can't remember. I'm due to have another blood test so I'm hoping to find out more then.

How can I tell what type I have? My nurse hasn't told me, this is one of the reasons I'm so confused. I'm due for another blood test this month so I'm hoping my nurse will tell me more

Ok, no need to worry 🙂 I think the confusion in this thread is because your avatar on the left of your posts is showing you as “Type 1”. If you don’t yet know what type you are, you could change or remove that. If you click on your name up in the right hand corner of this page, to the left of the little envelope, then click on Account Details and scroll down, you can choose No Selection for your type for now. That will avoid any confusion until you see your nurse.

I’m guessing you’re Type 2 but your nurse will tell you for sure.

Are you testing your own blood sugar at home? That is a good way to see what foods work for you.

Thank you for that advice, I will do that. As for testing my own bloods, I haven't been told to do that but it's something I've been thinking about doing, perhaps I'll have to start

Your avatar has changed ok 🙂 Yes, I think testing your blood sugar yourself will be really helpful. It will take the guess-work out of everything. You’ll then be able to see what effects various foods have and see how you’re doing in general.

If I were you I would contact your surgery and ask for an appointment and review. You should have also had feet and eye checks.

Hi, I'm going to try to get an appointment this week. I had my eyes checked last week, my eyes have got a lot worse than they normally would, my optometrist wont give me a new prescription until I've got my sugar levels under control
