So the 83 would indicate an average meter reading over the first 3 months of around 12.9. Is 12.9 the average meter reading?

83 was my hba1c reading. Before it was 109. Nurse said its still high but coming down.

You told us that.

Please answer the question, is 12.9 the average of your meter readings over the 3 months?

You can use your meter to check your levels two hours after eating and noting down which foods are associated with higher levels so you can cut back or replace them with something lower carb.

Well that meter tells the truth then, doesn't it !

Using a conversion table between IDCC results (the 83) to average percentage results.

Not that the HbA1c result is actually an average in truth - but without trawling through every single fingerprick BG result over the same dates - if you even have enough of them to enable them to be interpreted sensibly.

To get an average BG meter result of anything, the actual readings will be a complete mixture of results higher than 12.9, those lower and those around 13. Even if you regularly soar to 20+ but also have enough well under 4 - they can negate each other and produce a middle of the road A1c result. Been there, done that .... suffered for it.

So if I have an IDCC of 43 what is the average percentage result?

Can you attach the chart or link please?

It's DCCT (dunno where I got t'other initials from) and here's one

Microsoft Word - HbA1C Conversion Table (southend.nhs.uk)

This one purely converts the actual A1c result to the %age figure they used to be reported in, but anyway the same comments I made, still apply, but I'd rather post this link on the forum since it's an NHS resource.

I think this is the converter you want - it's from the other (red) site, I could not find it on this site. It should be treated with caution, accuracy depends on how often and when you fingerprick, over a reasonable length of time, eg the 28 day average on your meter not just over one day!

Good morning,

Thanks @trophywench and @silentsquirrel. I found the converter calculator on the other DB site here https://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-units-converter.html, unfortunately the link you gave SilentSquirrel is broken.

I was just trying to figure out where I am on the spectrum and what I need to do to improve and reduce my average numbers ready for my next A1c blood test in August/Sep. I take your point that the frequency, regularity, when during the day and over a reasonable length of time can all affect the accuracy.

My meter has recorded the following averages:
7 days 5.6 mmol/L = HbA1c 32mmol/mol in the converter (chart doesn't use mmol/L)
14 days 5.4mmol/L = HbA1c 31mmol/mol
30 days 5.6mmol/L = HbA1c 32mmol/mol
60 days 5.8mmol/L = HbA1c 34mmol/mol
90 days 5.7mmol/L = HbA1c 33mmol/mol

Would I need to keep reducing carbs to get the 90 day average reading down to be on the safe side given the lack of accuracy?

(Sorry to hijack your thread lumpipdip)
