Hello everyone my son ( 23 yrs) diagnosed yesterday Type 1after being admitted to hospital ,my head is spinning. His reading last night b4 tea was 19.5 and 2 hours later 24 ...They seem high ...is it just cos the insulin dose not right yet? Should I be worried at that ....oh I've a lot to learn Thank you

Welcome @Rachel L 🙂 Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis. Yes, it will take a while to get his insulin dose right and his blood sugar will be brought down slowly (it’s better to do that).

Is he still in hospital? Do you know what insulins he’s taking?

Welcome @Rachel L , sorry to hear about your son but welcome to the forum. There is a lot to take in when first diagnosed so the best thing to do is read up on the diagnosis. I got a free book from Diabetes UK which told me all the basics and i went from there. Ask questions, no question is too silly. If your son was started on insulin yesterday it will take time to have an effect, depending on what he is on and whether that suits him. As @Inka says, it takes time to get the dose right and he will learn how to adjust it when needs be. Any questions you have, fears or even a rant about how things are, come on here. We all are living with diabetes/parents of children with diabetes and there is a huge wealth of knowledge here from people who live with it every day and we understand.

Difficulty is of course, he's an adult so nobody medical will ever talk to you, only him. I was 22 when I was diagnosed, already married and in my own house, so i was on my own anyway. It hasn't harmed me, I'm 70 now, no 'diabetes complications' to speak of, just those of flippin old age these days.

I recommend the Learning Zone to you and your son. (bright orange tab at the top of every forum page) and a book which your son will probably have a sharp intake of breath at when he sees the title of - but honestly, it's excellent for any newly diagnosed Type 1 even if they are 50+ !

Welcome to the forum @Rachel L

Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis. It is indeed a shock at any age, and a lot to learn very quickly. They will bring down his glucose levels down gradually as they work with him to find the appropriate doses for both his background insulin (basal) which deals with the glucose that is dribbled out by his liver in order to keep him ticking over, and his quick acting insulin (Bolus) which deals with the carbs in the food that he eats.

To help your son keep reading in here and elsewhere and fire away with any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.

So grateful for your responses, all are helping so much keep things in perspective for me. What a fab friendly forum Thank you

Thanks so much ,very helpful

@freesia you mentioned a free book that you got from DUK, do you know if it still available? I would find it so much better than going into a site and then never being able to get back into it!

This is the book i had sent through. It doesn't go into huge detail but gives you the basic information. I found it helpful as a starting point, alongside asking questions to the DSN and on here. If i find the link for it i'll put it on here

Hi Rachel,

I too was diagnosed at about that age. I'd been thirsty for a while, went to g.p, got a blood test. A few days later I was told to head straight to nearest hospital. I think I was in about 2 weeks in total. To be honest, I don't rememeber much about what was going on once I was admitted, lots of doctors visiting my bed from time to time. I was soon up and running though once i'd left.

Initially after diagnoses, it's easier to stick to set meals, set carbs, set times and adjusting insuling each day 'till one gets good results.

Good results would be between 5-10mmol. Many of us get spikes in between meals but these can be sorted later on once your son gets into a better range and rhythm.
