I'm on metformin, I'm a bit confused with the carbs I don't eat alone because they bloat me but a lot of foods have carbs in. Do I need to keep a log of my carbs?

Welcome to the forum @Kirsty79 , I am glad that you have found us.

It would probably be very helpful to start to log your carbs at each meal. If you know how many you are eating you can then start to reduce this by swapping to lower carb options, or by reducing the portion size.

It can also be helpful to measure you BG before meals and about 2 hours after the meal to see how your body reacts to specific foods. We are all different and find that we react in different ways. You need to find out what works for you and testing can help to give you a much clearer picture. Many on here have used this technique to reduce or come off meds.
 
Many Type 2s find they need to watch the amount of carbs they eat. Different people can tolerate different amounts, so there’s no one answer to how many you should eat. The ‘answer’ is the amount that works for you personally to keep your blood sugar in range.

A useful thing to do is to keep a food diary of your normal food intake and then look to see what improvements you can make, or where you can cut down the amount of carbs eg if you normally have a bowl of cereal and two slices of toast for breakfast, that would add up to quite a few carbs. So you might want to change to a lower carb breakfast eg poached eggs on one slice of toast or whatever.

A really useful thing to have is a blood glucose meter so you can test your own blood sugar at home. That way you can see how certain foods/meals affect you and whether they ‘work’ for you. It’s a great guide and so helpful to see the effect of your diet and where changes are needed.
