I found out yesterday I am prediabetic and need all the help I can get please, i don’t mind admitting I was scared waiting for my blood results and from what the nurse had said about my previous count I though they were going to say Diabetes, I don’t know anything about it so very much in the dark right now , nice to talk to you

Hi, Kizzy. Welcome to the Forum.

Would you like to tell us anything about yourself, eg recently diagnosed, medication, managing etc? You're amongst friends so if it's help you need you've come to the right place.

Martin

Hi Kizzy, and welcome to the forum. It’s a safe space and there’s no such thing as a silly question so feel free to ask/share anything that’s on your mind.

Hi Kizzy, I have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes recently, lots of good advice on here

Hi @KIZZY and welcome from me as well. Tech savvy or not, you seem to have got hold of the basics pretty quickly so join in any conversations or use the new thread button to start your own thread and you will soon get into the swing of things. There are centuries of experience on here for you to tap into and we all started off knowing nothing about diabetes so we all appreciate where you are and will do our best to help.

Don’t worry about the tech side. If you get stuck, just come back to this thread and ask for help. You could also experiment by clicking the tabs and things like “New Posts” top left. You’ve replied to me exactly right so you obviously know more than you think.

Others with pre diabetes or Type 2 will be along over the next few days, but in the meantime I’d say don’t panic. Use this time to assess where you are and the best way to move forward eg is your BMI (weight) in range, what’s your diet like, are you getting enough exercise (walking counts - it doesn’t have to be gym visits or anything).

If you can keep a food diary over the next week, then that might help you see where you can ‘clean up’ your diet - maybe reduce some carbs, add some green veg, etc etc.

Don’t try to make massive changes all at once. Tiny, logical steps work just as well and are less stressful and more likely to be made longterm changes.

Tip for you @KIZZY. No need to click on the "reply" at the bottom of somebody's post to post something - unless of course you want to pick up on something specific they have said. Just type away in the box at the bottom of the page and click on "post reply". at the bottom of the box

I think @Inka's thoughts are a very good place to start. The last comment is, absolutely spot on for those hovering around the diabetes borderline and want to make sure they do not step over it.

Hi Kizzy

Pre diabetes tells doctors, you and us that your body can no longer cope as well as it used to, with dealing with carbohydrates once you've eaten them. Hence if you don't want your body to have to struggle more and progress into Type 2 diabetes, best take the action necessary now, to assist it.

It isn't all about sugar - though if you can cut out or at least cut down on a lot of stuff with it in, that will certainly help, since sugar itself contains 95-ish percent carbohydrate, in the form of both sucrose and fructose, fructose being the sweetening substance in fruit. They refine sugar from either sugar cane or sugar beet - both plants, hence the fructose content.

The next type of high carbohydrate food, is 'starchy' carb so eg anything with flour in it (bread, pastry, cake, pasta) rice (short and long grain) and potatoes, all sorts of fruit though 'tropical' fruit (including bananas) is the highest.

Rather than think of exercise as such , think of activity. Can you walk around the house, do bit of housework? There are also exercise you can do sitting.

Hello Kizzy, so good that you have joined the forum, and I hope we can help.

You certainly have a lot to deal with at the moment, so it is good that you are taking some steps to address the pre-diabetes.
If you can loose some weight, I'm sure that it will help with both the diabetes and the arthritis - but as many of us on the forum that is not always easy to do.

Some things you could try are cutting back on sweet things, reduce your starchy carb intake (e.g rice, pasta ,potatoes, bread and eat more leafy and veggies, opt for berries rather than high carb fruits.
If you have a look at some of the other postings by Newbies you will pick up many other hints and tips.

There is a lot to take in though, so take your time and maybe just change one or two things at a time.

Hear hear to taking your time - masterpieces are never created in a day!

Hi @KIZZY I understand that you need to lose some weight, but that you have health problems that make it har to get exercise. Don't worry, it is possible to lose weight just by doing the same normal amount of activities that you already are doing. It works for over 50% of people, just by cutting down hard on the amount of sugary and starchy food eaten. Even without consciously cutting Calories.
Just cut the carbohydrates and replace them with more Protein and more traditional fats (not Vegetable Oil) by traditional I mean fatty fish, fatty cuts of meat, butter, double cream rather than milk, eggs, cheese. Cook with butter/ghee, or lard or coconut oil. Use Olive Oil on salads rather than rapeseed or sunflower or corn oils.
It is carbohydrates that make most people fat, especially if those carbs are mixed with seed oil fats in processed food. But natural fats mixed with protein don't have that effect - instead we lose weight, lower blood glucose, have more energy, feel less hungry plus lots of other benefits!
