ah, twice daily injections! the 30/70 split sounds right - i was on it for years. there are other forms of treatment such as multiple daily injections (MDI) and insulin pumps. with MDI, you learn how to count carbohydrates, then take the appropriate amount of fast-acting insulin for how much you are eating and then take one injection of long lasting insulin a day (this is what i am on now).

let us know what happens 🙂

Hi Jody, I'm glad you found us. I was diagnosed 3 years ago and I remember coming home from the clinic with needles and insulin and everything and just thinking "What now???" You think life will never be the same again, but please believe me that it is hard work but it shouldn't stop you doing what you want to, you just have to get more organised!

How were your medical team today, and have you got an appointment to go back when your head isn't swimming?

One thing I remember my consultant saying to me was that although I was calm at the time, it would upset me for a long while, and that was ok and there was no need to have a stiff upper lip because this is a MASSIVE change and it's natural to be upset about it. It made me cry when she said that, but I was glad she said it because otherwise I would have thought I was being a drama queen.

Have you got some time off work? I took a week off sick to get used to everything, which was good to help get my head around it all.

Hope you're doing ok tonight, pop back on here often to let us know how you're getting on and ask lots of questions.

Big hug. xxx

Hi Jody, welcome to the forum 🙂 Goodness! Diagnosed today? There must be so many things that you are confused about at the moment. Don't worry, as long as you have an appreciation of the basics, you will quickly get to know the 'extras'. As you are on two injections a day, be careful to test yourself if you feel in any way 'odd', as it may be that your blood sugar levels are falling low and you will nedd to eat or drink something sweet to bring them up again. You will probably eventually move to four or more injections a day which will make things much more flexible, so don't worry about it.

When I was diagnosed, I read loads of books so that I could try and work out what to expect. One of the best is Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas - doesn't matter how old you are (I'm 51!) 🙂

Jody

sorry you have had to join us on the forum, but very glad you have found us so quickly. You must still be in a complete state of shock. There is a lot to take in and come to terms with. You must be having complete infromation overload at the moment.

Take it one step at a time, you dont need to become an expert in everything straight away.

How were you diagnosed? Did you end up in hospital at all? Do you have more appointments at the diabetic clinic soon?

Big Hugs

Rachel

Hi Jody,

Welcome to the mad house. Please ask anything and we will try to help as best we can. I just wish my parents or myself had been able to access something like this when I was diagnosed back in the mists of time!
