Hi I'm newly diagnosed today and to be honest scared and stunned that I have this that I know nothing about.
 
Hi Mandy70. You are not the first and will not be the last to be where you are now. If you can give us a few details of how you came to be diagnosed, and what you have got from your GP, then maybe we can help you get a perspective on things and get you on the road to getting things sorted.

We have all been where you are now but try not to stress, it is manageable once you get your head around it. How you manage best will depend on your HbA1c, medication advice and diet choices. Tell us a bit more about yourself?

We all know that feeling of shock and panic after initial diagnosis. It gets easier with time but the first couple of months can be a bit of a roller coaster as you try to adapt to a new and better way of life. Many of us feel that our diagnosis has been quite a positive event in that it spurred us to eat healthier and take more exercise and lose weight.... all things that make us feel better, so it is not all bad news. I had a chronic and severe migraine problem before diagnosis. I have not had a single migraine in the 7 months since my diagnosis. Not only that but I am now able to eat cheese until it comes out of my ears (OK not literally but I treat myself to a chunk of cheese every day) and drink red wine which was my only known trigger for the migraines and I fit into clothes that have been hanging in the back of my wardrobe for 20+ years! My partner's pet name for me now is "slim" which I love! I hope you are able to turn your diagnosis into a positive.
 
I've been told nothing by my Dr other than I'm diabetic. She's booking me in for regular tests and a course. I keep fit already and am losing weight with slimming world she's put me on tablets. I presume I just wait to hear from her. It's all overwhelming for someone already on 16 tablets a day with mental health and kidney problems
 
With diabetes, success is about taking control yourself and information/knowledge is power, so don't be frightened to ask the doctor or usually there is a practice nurse who supervises the diabetics at the practice. Ring up and ask for your HbA1c reading or get an appointment with the diabetic nurse and ask her. I understand that it is overwhelming.... I think most of us had that feeling at diagnosis. Are the tablets Metformin? If so, be sure to take them with a substantial meal and take them mid meal. They have a reputation for causing digestive upset, so surrounding them with food in your digestive tract helps to alleviate that. Normal weight loss programmes like WW and Slimming World are not ideal for Diabetics. The best thing that you can do is cut out the sweet stuff and significantly reduce your consumption of bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, breakfast cereal etc as well as fruit. These are all high in carbohydrates, which the body very easily turns into glucose. Interestingly when a surplus of carbohydrates are eaten, the body converts them into fat and eating a diet very low in carbohydrates makes the body burn fat, so a low carb diet usually means you lose weight without worrying about calories or anything else. It takes a bit of getting your head around as we have spent our whole lives piling them on our plates at every meal, but once you learn to prepare meals that are low carb, it is actually quite an enjoyable way to eat.
We are here to support you through that process. I too have suffered from mental health problems (stress and depression) for a lot of years and I feel so much better for cutting carbs out of my diet.

I agree with Barbara, I have never been better than I am now having lost over 4 stone and feeling better than ever. Be careful with slimming world, I was on it when I was diagnosed, thinking I was doing the right thing. Fruit has a high natural sugar content so needs to be really restricted, the SW free foods are also the worst carbohydrates we can eat, rice, pasta potatoes have all been cut out of my new diet and the only bread I eat is LivLife, a low carb version from Waitrose! On the plus side, I also eat cheese, butter, double cream, bacon yummy!

I tried Slimming World but was put off when the type 2 leader had trouble with her readings, she was very worried.
