Just introducing myself, I am Gerald, 57 ,and will be asking about advice on diet

Hi and welcome. You will find loads of information here so do take some time to read through the posts, then ask any questions you might have :D

Hi Gerald and welcome from me too.
Would you like to share more details with us about your diagnosis.... things like what medication if any you are on and your HbA1c reading which gives us an idea of where on the diabetic scale you are.... below 42 is normal, 42-47 is pre diabetic and 48 and above is diabetic but that can be anywhere up to about 150 and possibly even higher although you would be exceptionally ill in hospital with readings that high. Knowing your reading helps us to tailor advice a little more appropriately and also enables you to set yourself goals which helps you to focus on sticking to your new diet and lifestyle in order to see it come down. The early stages of diagnosis and getting your head around a new way of life can be extremely daunting and a bit of a roller coaster but 7 months down the line for me I am starting to feel that I am now getting to grips with it and I really enjoy my low carb diet and the weight loss is a huge bonus even though I didn't need to lose a large amount.

I am unsure what the figure's mean, but I have results back as mmol 20-42, the other is 16mmol 3.5- 6, of the 2 fasting tests I have had ,they are consistent.

I am confused with diets, there is the low carb/ high fat approach, I always been informed high fats are bad, but we are designed to run on fats aren't we? I am aware carbs are not just in bread, red meats, pasta, &rice ,there is the refined sugars in sweets& pastries, and breakfast cereals, which I don't eat, I do eat porridge, made from oats, a vice I will have to stop is the biccies with my morning cuppa, and a weakness for custard tarts!
The other food plan described as the Mediterranean diet, I am more minded to that, but not so keen on tomatoes.
So what is the advice, can I mix and match the diet plans, my appetite is 'nt very good at the moment, once the metaformin starts to take effect, I guess I will get hungry again.
