.hi diagnosed around 18 months ago after pins n needles in my feet,think my hba1c was around 95 after blood test,now about 60.currently on 2x 500 metformin twice daily,1x 10mg ramapril,was alsoon 900mg gabapentin for the constant pain in my feet but recently stopped these as not working,i could go upto 1200mg but if 900 not any good,dont think taking more will help.docs told me to take vitimin b complex instead(not sure if this will help).any different treatment anybody else on would be great as my job requires alot of walking and standind on feetHi Craig and welcome
Are you newly diagnosed with diabetes? It can be a bit of a shock!
Would you like to share a bit more information about your diagnosis... things like any medication you have been prescribed and what your HbA1c reading is.... that it kind of the benchmark for the start of your journey with diabetes and gives us an idea of where on the scale you are and may impact the advice that you are offered here on the forum. Ie. If your reading is in the 50s you need to take a lot less drastic action than if you are over 100, as some of us were when we first found out.
Anyway, the dietary advice is to cut back on all carbs not just the sweet stuff, so bread, pastry, pasta, rice, potatoes etc all need to be much smaller portions and increase the veg, particularly, the green leafy stuff like cabbage/kale/spinach and also cauli and broccoli. Cauliflower cheese for instance is a great tasty way to fill your plate up instead of having lots of potatoes and can be made with cream cheese and grated cheese rather than a conventional cheese sauce made with flour, butter and milk. Boil or steam the cauli until still firm, drain, coat with cream cheese and then sprinkle grated cheese over the top and put under a hot grill for a few mins to bubble and brown off. Cabbage and spinach also taste so much better with the addition of a knob of butter or a spoonful of cream cheese. Just little tips if you are one of those people who are not keen on veg.
