Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the end of october this year, so still really finding my way with everything. Im currently taking a prolonged release type of metformin. Just wondered if anyone could give me any ideas on meals for the whole family (have a very fussy child) as we just seem to be eating the same things all the time. Thank you x

Well not knowing what you 'normally' eat - it's hard to advise. I mean traditional English cuisine is meat, some spuds and veg. The meat and veg is still OK for diabetics (anything green is practically carb free as is the meat cos that's all protein anyway) so just the spuds to cut down on or cut out. Have a lot more veg if you're still hungry.

Rice based meals - change to cauli rice, if others don't like it, just you and they eat the same as usual. (grate the cauli and briefly stir fry without any fat) Pasta based meals, family can still eat and you can either cut down the pasta to the amount your body can cope with and stick to that amount or try 'courgetti' or any other spiralised veg, again briefly dry stir fried. Pasta incidentally you can cut down the carbs a bit anyway by cooking it till it's almost done then draining and cooling it down rapidly and completely then just before you're ready to serve it, dropping it back into a pan of boiling water to just finish cooking. It then does not hit your bloodstream as quickly as it does when boiled normally for the whole time and is enough for some T2s own insulin to cope with. You'd have to test this and see if it affects your BG readings post meal in a good way.

There are ways round almost anything you might like to eat and even ways of getting picky children to eat things you want them to eat, without them realising it's that - just tell us what YOU want to eat!

Hi ive changed to wholewheat pasta and rice. The only meat I eat is turkey, chicken and pork and gammon. Mainly all the veg I eat aswell. I have also switched to a cauliflower base pizza. Was just looking for different ideas on how to cook the meat as I grill or slow roast it, and what sauces people use to cook with. Thanks

I tend to use herbs and spices for flavour - but don't eat rice and pasta as they are high carb foods and can cause spikes after eating - are you able to cope with them? Do you test your after eating blood glucose levels?
Many sauces are thickened with flour, or other starches so they are not a good choice.
