Hi guys
First time in here.....
I've been on metformin and gliclozide for about 4 years, my levels are generally good and i'm not overweight.
I'm thinking of embarking on a vegan diet, and i'm wondering if anyone has any experiences/advice/tips etc?

Cheers
James

Hi James and welcome to the forum.
I’ve been vegetarian for many years but not vegan and have recently started to eat fish as well, partly because I found that when eating out trying to do low carb and vegetarian left me hungry!
Good luck with the veganism. It will take quite a bit of work to ensure you get all the necessary vitamins and minerals I imagine.
I seem to recall there are a couple of vegans on the board so hopefully they will be along to share their experiences soon.

Hi James and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I'm a vegetarian (for ethical reasons), mainly vegan but was fully vegan for around 4 years (20 years ago). It was quite hard at that time and involved lots and lots of label reading and eating out was very difficult. The Vegan Shopper produced by the Vegan Society was indispensable. Nowadays the vegan choice is amazing, a lot of supermarkets label products as suitable for vegans, eating out is so much easier as well with vegan options. There are numerous vegan substitutes - e.g. soya or almond milk, dairy free spread, yogurts, cheese etc. A lot of the vegetarian items are suitable for vegans as well. I've no experience of metformin or gliclazide so I can't advise you on that and having a vegan diet. As a T1 with insulin I didn't have any issues. I felt as healthy as I did as a vegetarian presumably getting all the right nutrients I required. You'll need to get used to reading labels very carefully. Good luck.

Hi @NotChrisFroome and welcome to the forum!

There's no reason why you can't follow a vegan diet with diabetes, it's about what works for you 🙂 We've got some information on our website and also a section of vegan recipes, and even a 7 day meal plan that you might find useful to try out whilst you're experimenting with it.

Good luck!

Welcome. As a low carb animal protein eater I will keep shtum about diets, but my vegan friends (and surprisingly we are still friends) seem to be thriving well on it. Good luck.
