Hi I was diagnosed 10 days ago after having double vision , losing a stone without trying and had a BS of 31.9, ending up in hospital . Feeling a bit down GP says could be type 1 or 2 not sure. Still confused really,

Hi rosjean, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear this. Had you had symptoms for long (excessive thirst, hunger, needing the loo), or was it just the double vision that alerted you?

Certainly, that is a very high blood sugar reading, have you been given any medication? What happened in hospital? I would suspect Type 1, possibly a slow-onset, given your levels and rapid weight loss, as Type 2 tends to be lower, although that is not always true. With a slow-onset Type 1 the insulin your body can produce is declining so it can't process the glucose in your blood enough and it remains high. With Type 2 the problem is not so much the insulin production, but the inability to use it efficiently - often the pancreas tries to produce ever more insulin to try and deal with the problem of lowering your levels. There are a couple of tests that can be done to measure the amount if insulin you are producing which helps with diagnosis - has your GP mentioned anything about this?

Whichever type it turns out to be, try not to worry - there is a lot that can be done these days and it is getting better all the time. Diabetes is a serious condition, but with the right knowledge and application, and a bit of extra day-to-day planning, it doesn't have to stop you doing things you enjoy. Also, you have a wealth of information and support right here at your fingertips and we will be happy to help with any questions or concerns you may have - so please ask away! 🙂

Welcome to the forum rosjean, as Northener says try to not worry too much, it will all come good I am sure. Everything is daunting to start with, but with the help of this forum, you will sort it. 🙂

Welcome Rosjean. Good luck 🙂

Welcome Rosejean
As Northerner said your levels and symptoms seem to suggest that it is T1 and I hope that you get a firm diagnosis soon.

What have they said are the next steps. There are simple tests that they can take to confirm the Type of Diabetes , which is important as the treatment is very different for each.

I know many who were symptomatic as an adult are assumed to be T2, but the frequency of T1 onset has increased in adults and the GPS often miss this. I was fortunate mine was picked up straight away, and once I had the correct treatment I felt a lot better, albeit with a lot to learn.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging messages.
I had been having dizzy spells for a while, but thought it was stress due to husband being ill. hospital put me on a drip, but assumed type 2, ignoring GPs letter saying family history of late onset type 1. Told to go and see my GP no follow up at all . Lucky he is on the ball and has done more blood tests. He increased meds to 1000 metformin and 80 gkiclazide. Have got BS down to 9.8 today. Given up sugar too.

Poor show by the hospital, especially if you have family history :( Gliclazide will encourage the pancreas to produce more insulin, although this may just accelerate the decline if it is a slow Type 1. But hopefully the tests will shed more light on the situation 🙂

Bear in mind that ALL carbs, not just sugar, will raise blood sugar levels, so best to keep an eye on potatoes, rice, bread, pasta etc. until you know more 🙂
