Little worried with the do' s and donuts.
Live in hertfordshire on my so all help needed

Hi @James keir Welcome. Have you been diagnosed (dx) long.
Feel free to ask questions we'll do our best to help.

Welcome to the forum, James Keir.
To be flippant, best to limit donut intake, as they're high carbohydrate food.
What's your activity level?
Do you need to reduce your body weight?
Do you take any medication?

Thank you.
Need to lose weight yes and I'm type 2 on metformin 1000 mg twice a day.
Need to get motivated to.

Welcome James, from another newbie.

Welcome James, glad you found us! I discovered that a custard donut has the same carbs (33g) as a tortilla wraps, although obviously not slow release. Lucky for me I can cover my carbs with insulin - I know which I'd pick

Hello James. Welcome to the Forum. Do you like walking? It is always one way to exercise. Thankfully, I like it. I like to go for a short walk after breakfast, lunch and tea. I also love Zumba but only on very odd occasions have I seen men there, although anyone is welcome. Do you like swimming? That is supposed to be one of the best all round sports.

Hello James and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Thank you for the comments
I need to get motivated hard when you work shifts and lived in your own.
So if there's anyngroups in Hertfordshire feel free to let me know

Hey, looking on the Diabetes UK website there looks to be local groups in Welwyn Garden City, Harpenden and St Alban's. If you go on the website and put in your postcode on the local area section, it should give you details

Hi James. In the same boat. All very confusing on what you can and cannot eat. Gets a little boring eating salad and fish all the time...

Hi Welcome.
Basically it's carbohydrates we have to be careful with especially the fast acting carbohydrates
Potatoes esp mash , pasta, rice and bread esp white, fruit juice and grapes are packed full of sugar.
Most of us find suitable substitutes, ie cauliflower rice, some of us are fine with a couple of small new potatoes.
Some here have Burgen (sp) bread , Lidle protein rolls or high protein bread .

I see from your other post that you don't eat meat. We do have some vegetarians on here. Hopefully they will be along soon.
Do you eat cheese, cream or eggs? If so they are fine. Some nuts are low carb

Their are two threads on here that you should find helpful both can be found on the carb/ queries and recipe forum.

What did you eat yesterday

To be honest the only way you can't find out how the various carbohydrates affect you is to test your own blood glucose yourself, just before eating then two hours afterwards

Sadly most T2s who are not on medications that can cause hypo's (low blood glucose) are denied glucose meters . If you want to test and are told no
Many here use the SD Codefree meter available directly from Homehealth as it has the cheapest test strips that we know of, around £8 for fifty where othe brands are £15 to £30
You're entitled to claim VAT relief, we use the mmol/l measurement in the uk .
They only provide 10 lancets and test strips so you'll need to buy more.

Thank you for your help. Burgen appears to the secret.. is this the soya and linseed one? I have only had one blood test since being diagnosed and going back for the my 3 month check end of this month. My level had reduce by 2% and hoping for this to drop more next time. I am not self testing so not sure what affects me and what does not nor if what I am doing is having a positive affect. Thank you for the information on the meter as I would like to know what is happening. I have cut out a lot of the carbs you have mentioned and if having bread I have the Hovis low carb one. The links you gave me are great, especially the "what did you eat yesterday". It shows we are in the same boat and have good and bad days and sometimes just have a blow out. I did on pizza and a coconut magnum!! Loved it. I am off to France next weekend which will be a test as I normally live on white crusty bread and cheese but it will give me the opportunity to be more creative, but then my nurse does say life is for living and for holidays and special occasions you have to give yourself a break.
