Hi I'm mum to a 9 year old who was diagnosed with type 1 in December last year. I'm finding it a challenge doing carb counting.... does this get any easier? Are there ways of making it easier?

I found it gets easier the further down the line you are, simply because you start doing most of the regular things from memory. I did find it helped in the early stages, if I was cooking something from scratch, even though it took time and effort, to carb count the ingredients carefully, divide by the number of portions, and keep a note of the answer, so that the next time I cooked it I could look up my note of the carbs, so I didn't have to keep reinventing the wheel.

Hi zena, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your little one's diagnosis, how are they dealing with it? Carb counting does get easier as time goes by, as you begin to become familiar with things eaten regularly and you get your eye in and can assess a plate of food at a glance! 🙂 Do you have the Carbs & Cals book or app? This can be very useful 🙂 Diabetes UK also do a free downloadable guide to carb counting which you may find helpful.

Do you have a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas? This is an excellent reference for all Type1-related information. Please let us know if you have any questions and we will be more than happy to help! 🙂

Thank you for the advice so far. Yes I do have the carbs and call book but find I spend most of my time weighing food so by the time my son gets it its near on cold. I completely understand that having diabetes can be stressful but as a parent I am embarrassed to say that I struggle to!
