Hi i'm new too. I've been diet controlled for 3 years, then two weeks ago put on metformin 500 1 tab a day, had very adverse reaction so put on Gliclazide 40 once a day a week ago. I'm finding the whole thing difficult and confusing plus dealing with dropped blood sugars, having had 2 hypos in a week. I'm eating very regularly. Diabetic nurse keeps saying I will prob have to change to another drug and to monitor bloods 6 x a day until tomorrow. Gp supposed to be phoning me today. I don't really want to change to another drug so near Christmas. I have cereal for breakfast, snack, 2 slices bread sandwich at lunch, snack, main meal with lots of veg, 1 or 2 small pieces of potatoe and small amount meat, snack before bed. Does anyone think I should increase my food at lunch and have more carbs for evening meal? I'm very confused as I had previously had tried to keep carbs low. Also told not to have fruit as a snack, add it onto a meal? Any advice welcome, although I know you are not medical. Many thanks H.

Welcome to the forum ronnierabbit 🙂

Monitoring lots more will help. Glic is a bit of a blunt weapon as it ill make your body produce insulin and if you don't eat enough carb's to satisfy it then you can get hypos. Mefformin can give you tummy problems for a while but usually it fades. There is a slow release version which is much more tummy friendly which might suit you better then the glic..

Hi and welcome Ronnierabbit - I am new also so we will learn together.🙂

Hi Mark , thank you for your reply. I'm not allowed to take Metformin again in any version. Was repeatedly throwing up, severe spasms and runs. got dehydrated. Took over a week to get any form of energy back and was potassium deficient afterwards. DDoc phone me today. I'm to take Gliclazide 40mg, half a tablet with evening meal instead of whole tab at breakfast. I hope you are feeling well on Metformin. I don't understand your hba1c readings. Mine is 53.

Ahh - definitely don't want metformin then! There are a number of other medications you can take, and not all of them stimulate your pancreas. Most of them are more expensive so GP's are not always too keen.

My HbA1c is listed in the old units - 6.0% is equivalent to 42 mmol/mol

Hi and welcome 🙂
I'm type 2 and fortunately am fine with slow release metformin but hope you soon get settled on something which agrees with you and helps you keep BGs down.

I was put on metformin just before xmas - stopped taking them on Saturday as enough was enough. Had to run to the loo (luckily I was at home and would never have made it to the loo at work), really bad headaches and terrible heartburn. Work wins over metformin so gonna have to ring doc and get an appointment so she can give me something else. Felt really tough on metformin - feel so much better today due to not taking them.

That must be down to mental attitude then since Metformin is a drug that builds up over a few weeks till it gets to full working capacity, so therefore takes about the same time to get OUT of your body. However, doesn't really matter that much, if you feel better and they can find something else that suits you instead !

Hi Trophywench. Unfortunately I was put on 2 x 500g tablets in the morning and at night. No build up. Been to docs this morning and she has given me metformin slow release and told to take just 1 x 500g tablet in the evening and if okay on them can work upwards. She did give me strips though and told me that I can have them all I had to do was ask.

OMG 2000mg straight off ! No wonder you felt rough! leave a week at least between increases of it.

2000mg straight away with no build up. Wow. If these doctors are unsure, why not just ask for advice! Baffles me! Great advice Jenny!

Hi.i'm a newby as well.the metformin effects gave me the miseries but lucky the m/r is much better for me.good luck

Welcome ! Good user name Mr Wabbot 🙂. Good luck with sorting medication out

So far so good with the slow release variety of metformin. Probably need to up it so will have to see the doc or at least give her a ring. Really need to sort my diet out though. Must try and get to grips with low carb again but found that it makes me feel sick these days so end up coming off it again.
