Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, bit surprised really as I thought I had a very healthy diet!! and not too hugely overweight!! but obviously I am wrong. 🙄

I have been Metformin for a fortnight and Gliclacide (spelling may be wrong) for a week, however, Metformin was having a terrible effect on my stomach so the diabetes nurse has taken me off of them so I am now on Gliclacide (1 & a half tablets in the morning and 1 tablet at night) whilst I was taking both types of tablet my blood fluxuated between 9 & 17 however, Just checked my blood and it says 20 which I believe is quite high - how long does it take to get things back in order?

Any advice please?🙂

Hi Mumball,

You are having a hard time of it aren't you? I'd go back to the doctor, not the nurse, and explain what's going on, make sure you take your meter readings with you as evidence and a list of symptoms. There are alternatives to Metformin that you can try, both pills and injections. Ask about them.

Welcome to the forums Mumball 🙂

I'd definitely go back and see your GP! It's not impossible that you are not actually a Type 2!

Welcome, and if in doubt ask, loads of good advice on here, I had same with metformin, was off it and then put on to the slow release version and totally fine with it 🙂

Thank you

Hi Thank you for all your advice, went back to Doctors and am now on one and half Gliclazide in the morning and again in the evening, however, my blood sugar is still around the 18 to 20 mark. I hope it comes down soon.

welcome! Sorry to hear you are having some issues already although this is fairly common. I am new here and the guys and gals have been great support so listen to them. I am T2 and it has only been recently after 2 1/2 years of metaformin side effects I started getting control and it was in main due to the great stuff in these pages. One point I would suggest is look at the amount of refined carbohydrate you eat like bread, pasta, rice and also white potato. Look at the pages on diet and carb counting. Doing that myself has had a remarkable benefincial effect on my sugar scores and weight loss, and general health. You are doing the right thing trying to get control already, I wish I had done that sooner. Well done.

I am surprised nurse took you off Metformin as an immediate step. Did you have the slow release version - it has SR on the box. This has certainly helped many people who had tummy problems with the basic type. Worthwhile asking.
